My friends 8yo mare was retired 3 years ago due to OCD so has been a field ornament since. She's 3/4 TB & 1/4 ID.
She will be stabled at night with 2 large haynets and turned out in the day.
Not sure what she was fed in the past but owner has asked me for advice to keep weight on without the fizz as she can be skittish so I thought I'd ask you knowledgable peeps what you think :)
I was thinking along the lines of ad lib hay and chaff twice a day to keep her occupied while the others eat?

1 net of hay (2-3 flakes) although he is not eating much of it, he probably only eats a flake a night then munches on his bed:mad: evening feed:
1/2 scoop sugarbeet
1/2 scoop Hi fi lite
1/2 cup of baileys outshine

(when the baileys outshine is all used up we will probably go back to

1/2 scoop sugarbeet
1 scoop alfa oil

Both my 2 1/2 year old and my older mare are on the same diet and rations, although she may go up a bit since I am now working her 5 times a week so we can get out with the boxing day hunt.

Neither have breakfast (well not really) he has the smallest handful of chaff while I turn her out but its more of a token than a feed, he has it finished in a couple of mouthfuls.

Ours (who live out) are all field ornaments at the moment due to me being pregnant. :)

They are on plenty of forage (hay or haylage) as the grass isn't growing very well now, salt licks in the field and a small feed of balancer with a handful of chaff. I would feed ad-lib in your friend's situation but ours are quite good at keeping up their weight so if I let them ad-lib they would balloon! :)

If she is happy to eat slop, I would look at A&P fast fibre. That should keep her nicely fed but without heating her.

I have a 10 year old retired TB. He's on plenty of fibre and oil. His feeds consist of Allen and Page's Fast Fibre (which I think is brilliant stuff!), and either Hi Fi, or Alpha oil, depening on how his weight is looking. He has adlib hay. I also keep him warm. His condition has always been excellent, and even though he's been totally retired for 18 months you'd not think so from first impressions.
