What do you insure for?

O.k, as someone who has never insured anything, except my old banger, I'm insuring my new horse and it's all rather mind boggling (to be honest I'm better with written text before me rather than listening to people on the phone). What things do you insure for and why? She will just be kept for hacking, schooling and local shows.

Don't have any of mine insured any more - it ended up costing so much money and the one time I tried to claim for vets fees, they wriggled out of it and then refused to insure that part of the horse's body in future. I am a gold member of the BHS (£51.00 per year) and this covers me for £10 million public liability. When I added up what vets fees I had incurred over the last 10 years and what insurance premiums I would have paid - I have saved loads of money.

i insure against vets fees, theft and death with SEIB. I have public liabiliy insurance in that too.

It's worth it if you don't have thousands of pounds to spare in the event of an accident. If you can afford to pay a 5 k vets bill, then give insurance a miss and just join the BHS.

I definately want to insure her, just all these extras they mention confuses me. Also how much do people pay per month for their horse? How much do the insurers pay out for vet bills for one incident?
Maybe I should have done a poll

I just insure for theft, death, public liability. No vets fees - think they are a proper take on. IMO the first question a vet asks when attending an injury is "have you got insurance" They plan the treatment based on your answer. If I had not insured a mare I had for vet fees, then she would have had a dignified end, rather than all the experimental treatment she underwent.
Sorry, just my opinion!!

We insure all of ours for everything - riding, driving, loss of use, death, theft, tack, vets fees etc, etc. Having claimed over £15,000 in vets fees, i cant imagine not having them insured for that. We're not in the position to be able to pay out thousands of pounds for vet treatment and i'd never forgive myself if we had to have one pts just because we couldnt afford to treat it.
There was an uninsured horse on our yard - got acorn poisoning, vet wanted to send it to leahurst where it stood a better chance, owner said she couldnt afford it and the horse was pts. She then went out and bought herself a £5000 new trailer to "chear herself up"!! REALLY p****d me off!!!!

But anyhoos, i've gone off topic now......!

Clyde is insured for vet's bills, death and public liability, theft of tack. I won't have a horse here that is not covered for public liability. Choose the company well, don't be seduced by lots of advertising in horsey mags. In fact, the biggest advertiser is the one to avoid! I can suggest NFU, Petplan or SEIB.

I insure for 5k vets fees per incident, I think the excess is 130 pounds. With SEIB it's all in one, they don't confuse you with optional extras, and SEIB are who the BHS use...tbh that's why i went with them. There are alot of cheaper companies, but cheaper usually means they've missed out essential things. I did insure with another company, then found out if ponio got lami he wouldnt be covered as he's essentially overweight. To me that's not right, so i changed insurers. I now have peace of mind, knowing I can call the vet out whatever and if he needed to go to hospital I wouldnt have the extra worry of having to find the money.

I'd been keeping a note on here of things that people recommend, and their websites are stored under a file marked "New Horse" on my computer. A good few people recommended NFU so that's who I called today and they were very helpful (just me being bamboozled

) It was just the loss of use thing I was unsure of due to the advisor hinting at not covering unless I was going to be competing, which I'm not at the moment. I'll see how much the difference will be once they come back with a quote.

Im insured for 100% loss of use, though i think i will stop this when i next renew my policy, as ive heard that most the time they wont pay 100% anyway? if i dont stop it at all i will go down to 60%
i bought my horse last july and it did make a big difference in preiums when i was searching for insurance.... it was about an extra £60

vets fees was the main thing i wanted for insurance cover though.

Im a gold member of the BHS so they cover 3rd party liabilty

public liability- vet fees ( 5000) - theft- death and tack. having had a 3000 vet bill before was very glad indeed to be insured, as said before if you have a spare few grand laying around nothing wrong with just having gold bhs. i feel happy knowing that if anything happened to my horses i havent got to worry about the cost. am with south essex insurance. they are very good
