Just made me wonder after watching my mare today if other people have stories about their older horses that makes them laugh. mine today came down the field for a mint, shoved the younger horse/cob out the road so she could get the mints! i was taking the cob in so as i was taking him out the gate she came on the outside of him and sneaked though, he is bigger so easier for to hide behind. She then proceded to walk up the track with us with nothin on stopping to have a wee chomp on the way, when she got to the stable she just walked to the post where i tie them up and stood there lookin at me! just cracked me up! i love older horses and thier cheek and wisdom!

The oldest here (37!)

certainly isn't as green as he is cabbage looking!!

Looks as if butter wouldn't melt but can still run away when being lead in and break away when tied up if he thinks the grass is a bit greener somewhere else!

Can smell sweets/treats/mints at about a mile and woe bedtide you don't feed them to him fast enough.

Gives great cuddles though - which is why he gets away with behaving sooooooooooo badly!!

His sense of humour. Like running off naked half way through a rug change in the pouring rain, then coming back after ten minutes and letting me carry on! And the fact that when he was ridden he would jump anything and combine harvesters were no problem. But fly spray or a plastic bag? Forget it!

My old girl is 28 and just so greedy its unbelievable....burst through the gate the other day with my 11yr old daughter screaming at me to do something. I didnt bat an eyelid...I knew exactly where she was heading....straight to her stable for her bucket and haynet!
All 11hh's of her.. I just laugh, I have had her 11 years now and she was so timid and shy and to see her behaving like this is quite heartwarming.

She is just so sweet, there is not an ounce of malice in her and we all just adore her.

That he is able to get away with everything by just looking cute!
The fact he knows how to break into the feed store

The fact that he looks all old/frail and innocent but god help you if you get in his way when dinner is ready :P
Also the fact that a few weeks ago he managed to escape from his field, get through 3 fences (post and rail, post and wire, and eleccy) and then find his way into the neighbours perfectly maintained lawn to have a munch

i was so embaressed when i finally found him ! then when i took him back he skipped along beside me nudging me and being cute

My old boy, my arab, god I just adore him, he owes me nothing and I owe him everything. We've ridden hundreds of miles together, had loads of adventures, he's given me some of the best times of my life, taught me loads, survived major colic surgery, put up with my rubbish riding, tolerated me hanging round his neck sobbing copiously in my happiest or saddest moments. We have these little private chats together in the field away from the other horses, I give him mints and he whickers to me in a lovely low tone and he stands with his head in the crook of my arm.

Finkle your mare sounds like an absolute darling!

The old mare I used to share would walk herself down from the field every night, she was very funny though because she would always stand in front of the stable door and wait for you to pat her on the neck and take her headcollar off before she would go in. She also used to glare at you and nudge you if she thought you were doing anything wrong, this included looking after someone elses horse and picking her feet up "in the wrong order".

But my favourite thing was when you groomed her she used to lift her back leg up and close her eyes in enjoyment, if she was feeling really friendly she also used to groom you back!

LOL she is....my mum lets her out if Im at work and she is nearly 70 and never been near a horse in her life. She rang in tears to say that she had run off whisst triyng to get her in the field gate.

Transpires mum took of the headcollar this side of the gate so pony took the opportunity and ran off! Told mum to get some feed and whizzed to yard to find her caught with her headcollar on, in the strangest way I have ever seen a headcollar put on!

Yard owner said that in 30 years of living there he had never had a pony escape..LOL.....I now pay someone to let her out if Im at work....mum still hasnt recovered!! Think mum has met her Nemesis.....two strong minded older ladies together!!

Minski my old girl is a total babe. she's 28, I've had her 20 years, she has arthrits and is nearly blind and she is still a total one off.

Still tarts with the boys, sets my youngser off for a charge about the fields. She is in heaven when you brush her with a metal curry comb, the harder the better, leans all her weight into it. She still bosses Kai about if she thinks there is anything yummie going.

She is also the only horse I know who lovel having under her tail hosed, don't ask, I said she was unique. As soon as the hose comes near, up goes the tail

Every day without fail, when she is turned out, within 2 stride of the gate she is having a nice role, in all that lovel mud.

I love so many things about my old man, Harry, who is 23 now.
The fact the he knows a bit about everything - he ran on the flat, then over hurdles, then over fences then did RC and PC and a bit of side saddle!!
I got him as my first horse when we were both 12. I got my best ever comment from a dressage judge on him ''hair raising canter for the judge''
blush.gif
think she thought I was going to jump her car
tongue.gif

He took my OH for his first ever days hunting - I told him if he was worried or felt a bit wobbly to hold his neck strap, first filed we got in and cantered he just dropped his reins and hung on to his neck strap - Harry just cantered down the field and pulled up with every one in the gate way
grin.gif
!
The fact the he is continually escaping and never happy with where he is - he bangs his door to go out, so I turn him out so he turns around and stands at the gate to come in
crazy.gif

The fact the girl who has just got him on loan has rang to ask if she can ride him in the English gag as she can not hold him
smirk.gif

and the fact he does this every time he has a treat

The trust he shows in us! At 26 and almost blind he still hacks out as happy as you like, we even moved yards and he has adapted like the superstar he is. The vet said we would never be able to move him, but its Jimmys custom to prove people wrong!
