New livery came on yard 3 weeks ago - bought 2 ponies with her.
9 days ago she had another pony delivered - totaling 3 ponies under her ownership.

Having previously been on grass livery she was finding it hard now having three ponies to muck out everyday etc.

She was really stressing about the time it was taking her as she also has 7 kids. She thought she would have to sell her one rescued pony but really didnt want to.

So last Friday I said I would look after the rescue pony so she could spend more time on her other two. Agreed she would pay everything but I would do day to day care, trialing the arrangement until xmas to see how it went.

Well today i arrived at yard for YM to tell me that the owner had had a lady come today and they collected her two other ponies. One pony has gone for 'backing' (it is 18 months old) until February and the other pony the owner just gave free to the lady.

I spoke to the owner this evening and said 'oh i guess you will want to do [rescue pony] some days now then'. To which she replied 'no'. She commented to YM 'Now i dont have to come up everyday'

Obviously as per our arrangement the owner will still be paying for the livery for rescue pony though. Although this was only agreed to help the owner out times wise so she could concentrate on her others.

HOWEVER - yard manager has a feeling that the money for livery for pony may stop coming, and i may have just inherited a pony!!

Pony is 9 months, isnt passported, isnt vaccinated, hasnt had teeth done and I have arranged for farrier to come out tomorrow as i wasnt happy with feet.

Now i dont know what to do, i want to passport the pony and get vacs etc but dont think owner is going to pay.

What would you do??

Sounds like the owner is in for what she can get ! I would either get owner to pay for farrier/passport etc. If your interested in said pony offer a few hundred or walk away now.

owner has said I can have the pony for free if i want her - but until i have sold my hrsebox i cant afford two sets of livery

and if i walk away who will be looking after the pony?

Hmm do you have a contract? I can't believe she sent one for backing for 3 months and its not even 2! Was the other that she gave away the one you pm'd me about - was looking forward to hearing from its owner

Doesnt this put you back into the situation that you were in previously with Ruby and Chicco. I would possibly offer help but no cash and if the owner doesnt pay its up to YO to resolve not you.

no it's not that pony - that pony belongs to this ladies cousin and there is a bit of situation going on there too!! But i cant say any more than that publically ;)

i'm in a bit of a pickle arent i? And all because i offered my time to help the lady - now i am being taken for granted :(

I do feel sorry for you. When I was on livery, my good nature was taken advantage of, to the point I was looking after people's horses full time for nothing! I couldn't bear for the horses to be left stood in with no hay etc so used to do it! Now they're at home so I don't have this problem! Why do people take horses on when they obviously just can't be bothered? Makes me so cross!!

Paint me proud- I'd be exactly the same as you! Hence why iv got a 10 yo arthritic, stifle locking id who I paid £1 for!! He enjoys life though as a field bum!! It's so tough being so big hearted, especially with animals!!!

if you want to go ahead with this arrangement you're going to have to get something in writing from the owner stating that she is the pony's legal owner and as such she will be responsible for the pony's costs inc livery.

Id also run this by your YM to check you're covered incase this woman does a moonlight flit leaving un owed livery bills that it is clear to all parties you will not be held liable as you are not the owner nor the person who undertook the original livery agreement with the Yard. The pony's owner is.

if you're not happy you're in a water tight situation with the finances in place and you definitely cant afford to pay for 2 horses im afraid you're going to have to be hard on yourself and decide you cant take the risk you'll be lumbered.

i know you want to do the right thing by the pony but sometimes you have to make your head rule your heart

goodluck :)

Hmmm, although its very kind of you to offer your help, it could be hassle and heartache for you down the line so just be prepaired.

Without sounding too negative, really if she bought/rescued 3 ponies she should be able to give them the dedicated time they need, without relying on others, its how some people end up collecting more equines, then when the help stops, money runs out, they have got themselves into more of a mess.

Just saying sometimes getting involved as much as you mean well, doesn't always help in the long run. :)
