Can I ask what do you pay for your insurance a month (for what breed of dog) and who do insure with? So many choices but naturally distrust all insurance companies from when we claimed for a horse years ago.

Used to pay 25 each for my 2 malamute with tesco. Really easy to claim, no hassles, when we got the 3rd they wanted 35 per month for her then the others went up on renewal even though we had never made a claim for Ash so we changed to direct line which is 20 for each of them

I have a Welsh cross terrier, castrated male who is 9 years old, his insurance is £42 a month, M&S insurance, started at £15 and never claimed in the six years I've been with them so has risen quite dramatically I think but they have an excellent reputation and the cover is the highest available

New puppy, uncastrated male Jack russell £12 with Petplan bog standard cover

5 month old lab, pay £15 a month with Tesco.
ETA, had my old lab insured with them for the 12.5yrs I had him too. Never had a problem with any claims.

50 pounds a month for labrador retriever, 7 years old, in Greater London area which puts up price, this is with direct line. I have £8000 per condition pot which is not limited by time. It was a lot cheaper but we have claimed £4500 for her ears. And there have been a couple of smaller claims. They have paid with no problems albeit a bit slowly. Also the excess remains at £80 whatever her age and it is per condition not annual.
Pet plan say they don't go up after claims so although initially higher might be worth a look but I don't know how true this is, just what they say in their advertising.however their excess increases massively with age.

4 year old chihuahua. £31pm with petplan lifetime. I have made about 4.5k in claims last year and they paid the vet direct. It was £27 last year so an extra £4 a month renewal - can't complain :)

I have one with NFU for my older dog although his insurance is high £124 per month, in the last seven years I have claimed over £18,000. His drugs per month cost anything from £130 to over £200. They pay me direct to my bank account always about 2 weeks after I send the invoices in. They pay for his food and the hydrotherapy he is having each week. This is for life £4,000 per problem each year.

My other 2 and my cat are with Pet Plan only because I got the first 2 months free. I also get a reduction for a multi pets insured and also for being the Healthy Pet Club. Their monthly payment is £15 for the cat and £34 each for the 2 dogs. Again these are for life.

I would never be without insurance, claiming with both NFU and Pet Plan has been easy.

I simply can't get over the cost of these vets bills. Are they so high because they know the insurance companies will pay? I don't remember these sky high costs years ago.

I suspect that you may have a point. It's always worth asking our vets who they would recommend, as there are those insurance companies who some vets would prefer not to deal with. My own large animal vet worked on a horse and the bill came to £1500, the horse was insured but the Insurance company paid the woman direct and despite taking the woman to the small claims court, he never did get paid.

If I total up ALL of our insurance premiums, to include House, Contents, Tractors, Livestock and Vehicles, I currently pay out about £600 per month. I haven't made a claim of any sort in the last 6 years, and I sometimes wonder if I wouldn't be better off simply putting that money aside, every month and then using it to self-insure so to speak.

In answer to the opening question; 2 yo Lurcher dog, with the CO-OP and it's £12 per month with no conditions or restrictions, that I can see.

Alec.

Our malamute is insured with Virgin pet insurance and he is £23 per month - we have claimed a few times for him, once with a luxating patella which required surgery and once with a torn ligament on the other leg.

Yep, if you get referred to Dick Whites at Newmarket the bills become eye watering. One spaniel had mri scan and 5 hrs of surgery and the other mri scan and 2 lots of surgery, both fees were capped at £10000 but my useless vets for the first spaniel had already spent £2500 discovering nothing and both dogs had abscesses internally through inhaling grass seeds
