Lighthearted really, but what sort of subjects do you talk to your farrier about?

My last one was always the same.. lovely chap, bit of polite conversation, this and that, always pleasant and not much memorable, the odd joke. The one before him was terribly proper and professional, and we mainly talked weather, horses, not much.

Have just been and seen the farrier for my friend's horse today and my goodness he can rant! He was a lovely chap but he was on (and on, and on...) about the whips in racing controversy that is in the news at the moment (it made me wonder if he is a member on here! ;) ) Spoke to friend and apparently he is always good for a rant on any subject going. To be honest it rather suprised me after my two very pleasant but not that talkative farriers.

So my question is, is he alone in being the only farrier who talks (well, rants :p) about anything other than basic polite stuff? What does your farrier talk about?

I hear the same stories about his numerous girlfriends.....but bless him he is good at his job and I know he would come out if my horse ever needed to be seen. He is about 1000 years old but worth his weight in gold. Good sort really.............!(is he sounding like a horse now)!

Hunting (he hunts with a different far inferior pack, lol!) who's gone off with who, the local racing gossip and usually any other load of nonsense we can think of; it's more like a party than a business arrangement when he comes here.

You name it we talk about it, have used him for the last 30 years, so more of a friend now. He came from London, so a spade is a spade and he will say what he thinks, swears like a trooper but is the kindest man, and so very good with all the horses never ever gets cross no matter what they try and do,we stay in contact all the time sending each other jokes (you know the ones) so can have a great laugh with him wonderfull chap :)

last conversation was about his and his 6 girl friends bit of a joke between him and the yard girls hes a bit of a ladies man  sometimes about how much work he is doing etc sometimes draw in the dirt on his bright orange van :) all sorts though usually ends up taking too long (2 hours doing a full set on taz) does more chatting then shoeing and sometimes he has a friend who has just qualified, then they start messing around and being mean to each other - entertainment for all of us

The one at work is generally vile and likes to try and discuss my sex life, which I try to avoid. We have kind of go used to eachother now as one day he called me fat and that I looked like a lesbian, the evil stare I gave him made him realise he shouldnt be saying those things. Unfortunatly I have to see him alot.
My own farrier is lovely and have been using him since I was 16. We talk about life, what weve been upto. Gossip about the strange people we both know

My farrier is grumpy!!! If it wasnt that my horse likes him and has gone from a pain in the arse to shoe to an angel I probably would give someone else a call.. I ask him how he is, if he is busy, about the weather... thats it :p

My old farrier always used to try and chat up my Mum. It was so embarrassing! They always used to flirt and I'm sure that if my Mum wasn't married to my Dad they would have eloped. Apart from attempting to chat up my Mum, I really liked my farrier he was always giving us advice on how to control F's weight and was always up for a laugh. I miss him!

All kinds of cr*p, he is very chatty!! Anything from gossip to serious horsey type stuff. He also usually has a minion, sorry apprentice or 2 so is like a little party in my garden, but with cups of tea instead of beer! :D

Don't see our farrier too often but he is a great guy, fantastic with the horses. But he has the silliest sense of humour and makes soooooo many cracks about Fany's name you would not believe it. Get him together with our YO's OH and they can crack on for hours! He will also give you the news/gossip on what is happening in the area, who has what for sale etc.

His horses, he shows traditional's at HOYs etc.
His Mrs who rides said horses and who I bought my horse off.
His son, who is a little younger than my daughter.

We have had a good chat about barefoot people .

He is a great guy :).

I am usually there when he shoes her but today I couldn't be. Like an idiot, I forgot to leave a cheque for him . I sent his cheque yesterday and text him this morning to let him know.
The text back was Don't worry I'll sort it x
I thought he might be a bit pooped with me. We have one farrier who comes on the yard and if you don't leave your money, he won't shoe them, which is fair enough. I was concerned mine might take the same stance, but he didn't :).

We talk about lots of things. We mostly gossip about the different horsey people we know.

I really like my farrier. He's got an easy going nature and easy to talk to. He's never smutty, flirty or grumpy which I really appreciate.

Mine is the exact opposite! I don't see him very often and if I forget to leave it for him then I leave it with YO and he gets it when he comes to visit YO's OH but if you say "did you get your money?" He just says "I expect so!"

Normally trying to set me up with his apprentice  who then runs away to hide and then he takes the piss out of him. Just realised that possibly makes me sound bad but it's more he thinks I shouldn't be single. But then the whole yard just ends up taking the piss out of the apprentice for being shy :p.

Got a new one now I'm at uni but he's not a talkative sort from what I've seen :( the farrier used to be an entertaining morning.

My farrier is highly intelligent and has a terrific warped sense of humour.I know he is always delighted if there is a man holding the horse at a yard, because it generally means he can talk about engines, gas turbines, air rifles, engineering etc rather than the girls who prefer to talk about horses, feelings and other girls.
I quite often talk about horses, but these days the conversation tends to be more domestic because I have been living with him for 7 years!;)

Normally his starter motor, followed by his IBS (in great detail) then chinese herbal medicine followed by all the gossip he gathers on his rounds. if I'm careful and manage to avoid asking him how he his, I can manage to get the gossip before the effects of the fried breakfast he had that morning!

My farrier is a quiet spoken, polite, astute and very gentle man. Gossip would be too strong a word really but yes he tells me all about which yard is doing what, what accidents and naughties have been going on at the tracks, all about the zoo animals he trims and how to trim their feet, what his children and wife are up to, how his other business ventures are doing and the odd little bit of tittle tattle. All the people he mentions I personally know so it's usually him telling me the version he heard and me telling him the version I heard. He's a very interesting and intelligent man and when he's here, he's here for a full day so I always feel very much more informed once he's gone as I feel I know almost everything that is going on within a 500 mile radius :)

All sorts really. We may share some gossip, whether that is chit chat or something more juicy, depending on what we've heard. There's always plenty of talk and laughter. He usually comes with his son who is also qualified, so very much a family affair as I often have a teenage child in tow...

Hmmm we start with what's the weather doing outside, who's turn is it to make the tea, who is doing the school run, what's the plan for the day, am I working this evening, what's for tea, who's cooking it, do I need another bale round for the horses, what horses is he doing today ... and so on ... :D I don't usually talk to him when he's shoeing :)
