Hi,

Just wondering what you think of this horse:

I'm looking for a companion for my lad, and I want to bring them on.

I was looking to get 2 sec B/C's but now Ive spotted this mare and I really like her. The obvious thing is her injury, is it something she would recover from?

And in all honesty, I think she's too expensive?

Any opinions welcome! :D

i saw her earlier. i personally wouldnt touch her when there are plenty of horses out there going for alot less pennies that dont have any issues and will do the job.

i saw it tuesday and it was up for 2k in the aft with no mention of injury and then by eve price was dropped and had injury. why????????
Shes lovely but would be a huge gamble and doubt she'd just come right on her own but that would if the injury involved the joint and she may not even be field sound

Yeah, I know what you mean. I just think if she recovered she would make a gorgeous hack/PC pony.

I suppose I should be sensible and close the link :p

Very pretty mare but wouldn't touch myself. A mare OH had a few years ago ended up being pts because of a fractured navic bone - they just couldn't control her pain and stabalise the break to allow it to heal and spare her the pain. As an aside (I obv don't know the people so not totally judging, but this did just come to mind as a thought) why would you sell a horse with that injury, would it not be fairer to the horse to treat the injury first? You could wind up with a frightening vet bill - you would obv not be able to insure to cover the pre-existing injury and the costs could be terrible, and sadly without any guarrante of a positive outcome.

She is lovely ,what a shame about the injury,it COULD come right is the key.
I would expect this as a freebie, as it may not even be field sound and could be an uninsurable money pit.
I wonder why they wont wait and see if she comes sound ?

Agree with the other comments.

If you want a companion why not contact the horse charities/sanctuaries. I have heard that many of them have waiting lists for horses to come to them. I'm guessing because people cant afford to keep them.

Could be worth a few phone calls.

yeah i know, i sent the link to a friend and by the time she got home and opened it it had been changed. She thought i was bonkers but when i sent it there was no mention of injury

this exactly, she is really nice and i'm sure if it was likely to come sound it would be given a chance

If you can offer her a forever home, then I'd take a chance.

If you can't do that then walk away.

Poor mare, who knows where she could end up.

I really like her... I can offer her a forever home out 24/7 and if she wont be field sound then I'd have her PTS.

I dont know whether Im just setting myself up to lose a fortune on vets bills etc.

I dont know...

Vet fees, questionable. Phone your vet and ask them. In your shoes I would think about it practically in terms of non surgical treatment - but possibly requiring some kind of injection treatment - which could add up to a couple of hundred quid. Put a ceiling on it.

And if you still feel the same about her offer them £350 - which is about meat money.

Thanks, I'll give my vet a ring. If the vet says she has a good chance of recovery with just time or treatment isn't too expensive then I'll ring the owners and ask about her.

I'm paying £500 for her, so if £350 is meat money then thats what I'll offer.

Thanks for all your help, I'll let you know what the vet says :)

I reckon if the price changed suddenly, she's failed the vet!!! Sometimes you have to be really hard, but you need to walk away. If the current owners really cared about this little horse, they'd have either kept her until her treatment was complete and then sold her if she was sound enough, or had her pts if she wasn't insured and her chances weren't good.
If you are really seriously still considering her, ring the owners and ask if they will give you permission to speak to their vet. Might be worth a try and he should be honest enough to tell you the worst. Or not!!
Good luck.

also is she far from you? Just wondering whether travelling her could make it worse?! Good luck with the vet convo :)

I live a long way away from Cambridge, about 5 hours but I know a travelling company who would keep overnight if needed :)

Just spoke to my vet and he said if I really am interested then don't pay more than £200 as the amount of time needed for this to rectify itself could be years and treatment-wise he thinks it'll cost around £400 and even then there are no guarantees.

I've emailed him then link to the advert, and to this thread so he can take a proper look, and I think I'm going to get in touch with the sellers, they might be able to tell me what there vet has already suggested.

I know a lot of people don't like these sellers for whatever reason, but I think the mare is lovely, and if I can offer her a decent future then I'm going to do everything in my power :)

Thanks for all your help! :D

As long as you are going into it with your eyes open and you have no expectations of her returning to work within a given time frame then I think that she's one lucky mare to be given a chance by someone, good luck withn whatever you decide.

The thing is you know what you're getting. I actually hope that she can come home to you.

Fingers crossed anyway.

Yeah, I suppose its totally different knowing a horse your buying is lame :D

Going to send them and email now, and then maybe give them a call tonight. I really do like her, but have set myself a budget which has to include getting her to me, her and possible treatment and I'm going to stick to it. This means the most I can pay for her is £325, but I will stretch to £350 if I have too...obviously I'd prefer not too :p

Thanks and I'll let you know how I get on! :D
