Is it photo or is there something distinctly odd about her back? As an aside, what did she do to her hock? She looks a solid type - what do you want to breed out of her? As in for what discipline.
In answer to your question - probably not unless there was a reason for the conformation of the back that was not genetic - and the mare was either superbly bred or had performed to a high level. Im not kean on the hocks either........
No i wouldnt breed from her on her conformation, her hocks look very upright, her back roached and slightly back at the knee... im sure she is very sweet though.
The mare jumped for Italy in Athens 2004, Canada, Aachen , Rome , Norway etc. Her blood lines go back to Uriel on her sire side and Fra Diavolo on her dams side. Shes in foal to 'L'Arc de Triomphe' hence my other post asking if anyone knew of him. Ive been trying to find a photo of him but had no luck, my comp is too slow for the videos Ive found
. Antone have one to show me? Mairi.
PS, the mare is made as you see her and apart from her near tendon which is oinfired shes sound. Its so true-you cant judge a book by its cover
Hopefully she will pass on her jumping ability and not her conformation to the foal, and not the other way round. Be very interested to see photos of the foal once he/she arrives
Her hocks are both capped, usually due to trauma, not confirmation. Looking at her career, she is not a young mare and has had what looks like a full working life so I would expect to see some lumps and bumps on her. I would like anyone to show me a top international show jumper that is clean, or a top dressage horse for that matter, they really don't exist.
She does have an extremely roached back, probably one of the most extreme cases I have ever seen, however, I was always told that a roached back, although considered as a confirmation fault, was also a very strong back and usually does not ever affect a horses performance, she is proof of that. I would not be put off by a horse with a roached back, but I would NEVER consider breeding from a horse with a dipped back as it is a very definite weakness.
I had a Concorde mare who was very similar to look at, her back was not as roached as this mares, but it was roached. She was purchased by a member of the Royal family here and has bred the most beautiful foals, who are not roach backed.
I would breed from her if she was mine, I like her a lot and wouldn't mind her stood in one of my fields.
100% agree with cruiseline! I would happily breed from her. For all the 'faults' people highlighted, none would put me off trying to breed a show jumper from her. Sure she is not going to win a showing class but who gives a damn when she can obviously jump pretty much anything!
Interesting choice of stallion though. Personally L'arc de T would not be on the top of my list if she were mine. That said the offspring will probably have a fab jump.
The stallion was chosen to pass on his ability to jump but leaving the brain and energy of the mare plus her jumping ability.Have I made sense? I know what I mean but dont know how to put it over

I hope it didn't sound like I was criticizing, I was just making a personal point of view. As I said in your thread about L'arc de T, I have seen a number of his offspring and they are beautiful. I very much look forward to seeing the photos of the foal next year.
If you still want to see some info on L'arc, the stud send out DVD's for free.
What a great topic!!
From someone who knows very little about breeding I feel that you have to take into account the mares history as well as the way she looks!!
How many mares look great, have wonderful conformation and have been unsuccesful?? A lot......
Thumbs up to your mare, I hope her offspring are as successful as her.
Once again someone has thrown a spanner in the works on this forum, I love it
