Now I understand what I might say make some people jump on me, but I suppose I am safe behind my laptop

agh!

Ok so today I went for a endurance training ride. I've never done it before, and I thought it would make a change from the normal dressage and jumping stuff we always do.

I go alone, but meet up with two women who know C's owner - and have been doing it for a while.

Start off ok, then they head off for a trot and it was soooo fast

not just fast trotting, but power trot!

C could barely keep up with these two cobs and was tossing her head, generally tense and kept pulling me

I asked them to slow down, and they did for a bit but then went back to the power trot!

One of the cobs seemed to object to slowing down and had two paces - slow walk and mental trot!

C kept trying to canter on hard ground (not grassy, not a road - but somewhere in between!) and I kept asking her to steady using my body and hand (I tried to use less of my hand, made a mistake of using too much once) and she did come back to me, but then the mentalists ensued and C was bouncing around and tossing her head everywhere, frothing, you name it.........

So........

We ended up cantering on tracks that I wouldn't even normally trot on

but I had a light contact, she was relaxed and happy to come back when asked - quite calm. I am worried that her little lithe legs are concussed but then if Arabs do it at a full blown trot........?

What do you guys think? There were no vets there for a trot up because it was a training ride, her legs were cool and she just stood eating grass when we got back, quite happy

The route did take us though some overgrown [****] paths and now my arms and cut to pieces - some poor woman has a hole in her chin from some brambles! I liken endurance to extreme hacking

I had fun with C (when her trot was good, it was lovely - can't wait for dressage!) and it was quite a bonding experience for us
grin.gif
but I don't know of I like the mental trots....

Don't get me wrong the people I went with were lovely - we just normally hack alone and I suppose this is what you get with hacking with others

Am I going to have a broken horse tomorrow
confused.gif

Just some Woof Wear brushing boots and a sausage boot

I gave her a sponge down (on legs too, they seemed fine) when we got back to the trailer too. She is having 2 days off (I think the ride was 16 - 18 miles?)

I just feel weird because it's gone against everything I was taught, and the trot were mental lol

Personally I would rather have a calm collected canter over a rushed panic-stricken trot any day of the week! I imagine in terms of impact on her legs the trot and canter were pretty similar so if she isn't used to that sort of work anticipate she might be a little sore tomorrow (have you any ice tight or similar to put on? and did you bandage tonight?) I think she will be okay though, and agree with your decision to canter

Erm, she is out in the field

But I did give her a bath before teatime! (Is this a child or a horse we are talking about lol)

It's just her trot was more 'up' then forward and it felt horrid, I don't want her working like that.....
crazy.gif
I'm not an endurance rider am I
blush.gif
I would be if I went with my friends
grin.gif

LOL, extreme hacking!!! That's my kind of thing, I love it
laugh.gif

Hope C is fine - they're much tougher than you think. Even FB used to be able to trot like a maniac for kilometers and he is hardly endurance material!

If she were mine i'd cold hose then put put ice tight or similar on her legs for the night. Depending how she is tomorrow perhaps a bute. However, i think you did the right thing, i'd rather a steady canter than a mental trot too!! Maybe try and find some less 'extreme' hacking buddies next time lol

Do you think you will be up for it again? Have you ever thought of doing Le Trec? Not that I know much about it but it sounds good fun and perhaps you can do it more at your own pace.

Good on you though for giving it a go.

xxx

Yes I would do it again - but maybe with someone who knows me and C, or on my own? I just don't want to trot up narrow, overgrown stoney paths with brambles attacking my face
crazy.gif

I would love to try Trec and have been meaning to for ages!

I volunteered for someone on the forum last year and it looked like loads of fun...there are jumps
