Basically a while ago I decieded I needed a little break from horses. I didn't want to sell my mare but I thought about part loaning her out for a while, until I felt a bit better about things in general and to help me financially as well as things were a bit tight. I keep her on full livery becuase I work fulltime and commute about 4 hours a day, so it's just not possible for any other kind of livery (I ride at weekends so i thought it would be nice for someone to be able to ride during the week and look after her on days when I can't enabling me to still ride when I wanted to)

Basically, i was told by the yard owner that they do not allow the liveries to part loan horses out. I was a bit shocked as I'd never, ever heard of this before. I think it's a bit cheeky as she's MY HORSE and I want the best for her. And I can't try and ride in the evenings becuase they lock up at like 5.....and I get home at 7! So I just basically felt they were making life SO difficult for me when all I wanted to do was make sure my horse was being taken care of in the BEST possible way and getting what she needed day to day (with excersise etc) They were actually quite rude about it too, not open for discussion, they don't allow it. END OF.

So anyway, I tried discussing it with them and they said it's becuase they don't want other people coming on to the yard (security issues) and they do not allow people to part loan their horses to pay their livery bill.

Now, as it happens, I've made the decision to full loan my mare out and have some people coming to see her BUT I wanted to get your oppinion on the above incase I'm the only one who things that it's a bit of a strange view point on liveries and what they do with their own horse?
If I don't manage to loan her out within the next couple months I think I should move yards until I do as i don't really think the above attitude is accepable?

What do you think?

Your yard shuts at 5?! Thats ridiculous!! The yards near me in the summer still have people enjoying their horses, what they've saved all their money for well into the evening. Moving yards would be top of my list, if I didn't loan within the month tbh - wouldn't you like to enjoy your horse on the nice long summer evenings?

I think its a bit strange that they won't allow liveries to part loan yes, but they make they rules, although they do seem strange - and I woudl think other places would have no problems with people sharing a horse :)

I don't blame them to be honest. They have a contract with you, to look after your horse. The sharer could end up being a nightmare and causing them hassle. As they have no contract with the sharer they would not be able to enforce their rules or standards.

They have probably been burned before where someone said I can't pay because my sharer hasn't paid...

I can understand it if that was going to be the case, but I'd always pay MY livery bill in full on time as i always have and whatever the sharer gave me would be a serpate issue between me and the part loaner.

It's just I've never come accross it before at other yards I've been on or known off and thought it was a bit 'off' I see your point that they may not like it becuase of contract and and whatever though.

Thanks guys. I feel SO lost at the moment as I just want to do what's right for me and my horse but it seems that whatever I deciede, something seems to want to get in the way.
I don't want to stay here but it's never as easy as that sometimes! I'll definetely move if I haven't found the right loan home within the month. I mean, I've got someone coming to see her who sounds absolutely perfect so really hoping it works out. But until then I'm kinda stuck here

And yea - closes at 5. once all the lessons are done and the horses are fed, everyone goes hpme and the place is locked up. I asked about riding in the evenings and having my own key but it was brushed off.

Im sorry but that is ridiculous I dont finish work until 5 and im normally at the farm to no earlier than 7

I would move ASAP!

I would move all of my liveries have a key and are expected to lock up at the end and let us know when they are going so the alarm can go on

How on earth do people who work get there? Surely the majority of the nation work 9-5?!

How sad that you're missing out on lovely summer evening with your horse, that's what owning a horse is all about, for me.

I can kind of understand the no sharers rule - sometimes it can be a nightmare trying to keep track of who is doing what on what days BUT..

I cannot believe your yard shuts at 5pm??? when does she expect that her clients, who are probably too busy working during the day, to ride and or just spend time with their horses!! thats madness!

I can understand that she may be worried about security but surely giving everone a key / combination to get in once the gates are shut shouldn't be a problem??? what happens if you go out to a show and don't get back til after 5?? do you have to camp outside the gate? MADNESS!!

First off - I'd move my horse to somewhere more accomodating!

I have seen this situation quite a lot where livery yards are run as part of another business - riding school or competition yards, liveries always seem to come last.
We can ride in the evenings at our yard as the lock is a combination and we all keep our tack at home, but it's not much fun if you have to do this every day and there's no one else around. I'm in the fortunate position of being able to ride when I want so if I want company/support I can have it, but people have left our yard for this reason.
I sympathise with them to an extent about the part loan thing, but they should have made this clear when you first went to the yard, and ideally it should be in your contract. They were lucky you asked them, some people would have just done it!
