ok, went to my local racing yard, as thought id better get as many options as possible (going to go and try the chestnut next week) and the owner said that they dont sell off their ex racers but rehome them, so if i ring back tomorrow they will let me know what they have, said that i wanted something to bring on and event and he said thet they should have something suitable, the condition is that i cant sell it on would have to go back if it doesnt work out

does this sound like a good option, this is a National Hunt yard, and he said they have horses from 3yrs upwards, that just wernt suited to racing, is this a better option than buying a 5yr old ex flat racer? too many options now i dont know what to do! really liked the chestnut i saw yesterday, but this is very local and maybe sounds like a better option, also if i take something on from them without buying it, is it ok to still get it vetted? thanks in advance guys, and sorry for the long post!

i would def go up and have a look at that yard sounds like a very good idea to me as if you dont get on after all you can give it back to them! Im assuming that you are buyinmg one to keep?? If you are buying one to then sell on obviously would not be an option for you!

If you arent wanting a horse to sell on then it sounds ideal, no risk of losing your money on a dodgy horse as you can always send him or her back and you arent paying for them.

yep, buying one to keep and event, and just generally have fun with, if its the right one would have a home for life, and i suppose if it wasnt it could go back and i wouldnt have to worry about selling it on (which i hate) also would save some money which is always good

its just a race yard, thought when i went up that they might a a couple for sale, but he said they dont sell their horses, and he would have to check the home etc.., and did i have any experience with Tbs.. once i told him about the crazy hector he seemed quite happy

Go up and have a look, you never know, and you can always send them back if all is not right, sounds genuine enough not often that happens. xx

It sounds like a brilliant idea to me. Perfect. Its like buying a horse as you can do what you want, eventing etc, and keep him for life. Or like you say,if he isnt the one for you, you have lost nothing, and don`t have to `sell` just give him back with no worries about where he is going.
Perfect idea.

It is normal for racing yards to ask you to not re-sell the horse. They will be giving you the animal, free of charge on the condition that it has a good home and will not go down the road of selling/sales/meat waggon. That is what they are trying to safe guard against.

By having a younger horse, it has less wear and tear and will be more trainable, they are guiding you in the right direction. Racing yards do not give horses away willy nilly and they will be carefully vetting you. They have the welfare of this horse at stake and their name. Remember this horse has been bred, handled, looked after to the best of any standard, as racehorses can become very valuable. You will be able to see how much the horse has cost by looking up his history (Racing post, just enter the name, and all history will come up).

Usually after a period of time, it is possible to sell the horse and the yard will be happy for you to do so. It is better to be open and honest about what you want the horse for, and if it is long term. It also depends if they are going to keep hold of the passport (some do) this is to stop the horse from ever being raced again. They will let you have it back for what you need (injections) etc.
