Im thinking of getting one. I'm 17, just sold my old pony, and want to do a bit of everything and maybe BSJA, BE and BD.
what are typical welsh's character's, I also heard they are very willing? Is that true, or does it just depend on the horse.
thanks, lottie

In my experience they can be quite a handful. I do know of one girl that is really not a good rider who manages very well. Her cob is grossly overweight and unfit though. You do sound experienced though.

Like any breed it can be down to the individual horse/rider combination. They do make good allrounders.

my 16hh welsh cob is a big friendly giant. he is too dumb to ask questions so he will basically do anything and at only 5yrs old he is a star. Although saying that they all have their personalities, mine just tends to have a laid back, chilled but very playfull character.

Mine has been a handful in the past - he was terrrible when I got him as a 3yo, really seriously bolshy, would happily trample over me. However, with a lot of work he came right and Ive owned him 6 years now and have to say he has also been the most rewarding horse. Occassionally he will still test me (but never wins so very half heartedly!) and jeesus would he test a new owner. But with Welsh Cobs I find once you get them on side and earn their respect, they are truely wonderful. They will do anything for you. Mine has a huge character, he's like a person. He's also the sweetest horse in the world and makes it clear he loves me which is quite amazing as Ive not had another horse show it so clearly as him.

Mine mainly does M&M ridden and WHP which he suits obviously. He's also done BSJA to discovery and some BE intro's (clears). He's my "fun" horse, he's not good enough to be my serious comp horse in the sense that he's too heavy to make the speed for XC and too "pingy" (welsh D's often jump like deer, very up and not very across!) for show jumping so I find distances can be dodgy which limits how high we can do! He is still a great lower-level horse though as he's extremely honest etc.

Definately recommend them though. Nothing else has such a character IMO!

Magic Magpie - I know what you mean about "too pingy". mine would bunny hop bewtween fences. I remember one pony club rally when we were in the top group with 16hh horses (all my friends moved on to horses at about 14-15 yrs old I kept Ebony my 14hh D until he died when we were both 27!). We were doing related distances and the instructor said "there should be four strides in here but Ebony being a pony might put in five" We had to count the strides out loud and Ebs put in 7!! Having said that we finished the lesson with a bit of fun with a chase me charlie. We beat all the big horses at both height and fence width. We started with a row of traffic cones and took one out each time. He won at 3 cones width but we also did two. My instructor wouldn't let me do one, said it was too risky and would finish on a bad note, but I think he would have done it.

Think that shows that they have the heart to do anyting and try their best for you. I have genuinely never met one that can't jump (they may not want to, but they all can!) and have never met a nasty one - stubborn, yes, over-excitable, definitely but nasty, never!

Just taken on my friends welsh D as she needs to sell him and has just had her second baby. I've never had one before and am pleasently surprised. He is really clever and just loves to learn, so quick to pick things up. He is really bold and can jump a house I was gob smacked at he is only 14.2hh but he thinks he is much bigger!! Does need a firm hand tho he can be a bit bolshy. He needs to find a nice new home where he can really enjoy himself.

i luv welsh Ds but the can get very strong and be a bit of a handful
