Well we live in the lovely Lincolnshire and around our tiny village, not many people have garden fences which i completely understand it's very expensive to put a fence around a lot of land :-)

We have two dogs and they are only allowed in the fenced back garden as truth be told if they were out at the front if the pointer caught sight of a furry small thing she would be gone and could cause a hazard to both drivers and herself.

When we were taking the dogs out earlier we were tootaling along when a dog ran out of a garden without a fence and nearly got ran over befor smothering out little Jack Russel :D lovely dog i must add, so quickly ushered 3 dogs to the side of the road and thanked the very patient driver.

So my question to you is what do you think of keeping a dog inside of a garden with no fence, the reason why this is posted in here is i am now slightly nervous about going that way incase it jumps out at Tess who wouldn't do anything and im sure if it was Horse aggresive in such a horsey area they would have a fence.

I would like to add I don't want to cause WW3 :D i completely understand having no fence if your dog is well behaved and stays inside ofthe boundaries. If so would you be willing to swap for a naughty pointer ?

My garden is 200ft long and has no fence along one of the long sides. My welsh terrier would be in the next county if left in there. We have a lunge line attached to a tree which he is clipped on to when he needs to go out.

Half of our field is securely fenced so he has free run of that for exercise

Even the best behaved dog could be tempted to leave a garden if enticed or excited by something so I would never risk leaving a dog free in an unfenced garden

In saying that ours did once slip out unnoticed and went to a BBQ party down the road for two hours while we hysterically combed the countryside for him. When we got a call to collect him he had been thoroughly spoiled, goodness knows why they didn't call us earlier!!

Yes that's what i thought you can buy things to teather them to the ground if worst comes to worst, i'd be worried about them getting out into the road poor begger.

That's fantastic he has his priorities right then :D

Surely its not legal? You have to be in control of an animal in public. I don't know any dogs who wouldnt cross the boundary, at which point they'd not be in control if owner inside?

I wouldn't be happy doing this with an incredibly well trained dog.

If you can afford a dog and it's upkeep, ypu can afford to care for it properly and either keep on a line or fence the garden.

The little fella is on the lead at all times at home. He is either being walked round or is tied to a fence or shut in a stable if I am seeing to the ponies. We are far to near the dulecarridgeway to risk letting him run loose. If he was chasing something furry I don't think he would notice the cars or lorrys traveling at 70mph :(

It did scare me, a huge fluffly GSD running at me and my little JR :D, the woman was very apologetic and no harm came to us so was happy to smile and carry on.

I think at the end of the day like you said it's an animal and they have instincts I'd only be happy with my dog out if it was fenced in.

That then makes me worry will we be able to hack down there without being jumped on by this dog as Tessy was attacked a few months back by a rottweiler and isn't a huge fan of dogs bursting out of hedges at her :o

If I was out with it and properly trained I would probably not worry about lead then. But only with properly trained dogs, if it was likely to shoot off after another dog/toy etc and was bred for ratting/rabbiting etc and not trained then I wouldnt. Never alone.

I wouldn't do it however good the dog was.

Our neighbours do it, they have a fenced garden, but can't be bothered shutting the gate as it would mean they have to get out of their cars when driving in. They shove the dog out in the garden alone all the time, and it frequently goes in the lane. Its a small lane, but there are a good few cars, and it has been run over once already, plus its a black/grey cocker so doesn't show up.

There is another lady that walks her dog on a main road that I use on the school run. Its a busy A road across the moor, with a 60 speedlimit. This dog walks just in front of her on the roadside of her and is not on the lead. The dog is as good as gold, but it always scares me every time I see her, it would only take one time for it to not be good as gold...
