I am just wondering because I feel soo embarrassed to go the riding club in beige breeches and tall boots even though the breeches are really baggy

Don't worry. Make sure your horse is beautifully turned out, and be kind. Every teenager agonises over what they look like at some point - just concentrate on your riding and have fun.

Once long ago as a teenage girl who lived in jods, I would have thought wow a boy that rides ponies.....you wouldn't have been safe in this area, there was only one boy who rode! Shouldn't think it would be much different now.

Ahaha! Have turned 20 now so not sure if I'm allowed to look- but no it hasn't changed much!!

I agree with you on the skintight thing I am a woman and far more at home in jeans , wearing thin fabric jodhpurs I am forever worried someone can see my pants although I know they probably cannot I feel self conscious. I found equitech jodhpurs were more substantial fabric, like wearing skinny jeans and with a long top too I now feel much better. If I was you I would look for a jacket which is cut slightly longer, thicker fabric for the breeches and consider pleated front breeches too , pleats make everyone except skinny teenagers look fat but is better than baggy imo which is so unflattering to anyone. Or if you are not competing and it is only dress rules for lessons, is there someone sympathetic at the riding club who you could speak to, someone in charge? I really do not see why you could not wear beige trousers and jodhpur boots with your jacket and shirt it would look just as smart and with todays stretchy fabrics need not be restrictive to ride in if you can live with an inside leg seam. I have an old book with a man dressed like that and a flat cap to match the tweed jacket in the days before riding hat standards, looked perfectly ok to me.

Don't worry Benji - as a teenager, a boy who rode was the best thing ever... just be polite and be careful not to get a big head with all the attention!

Me being naughty minded read the title as what do teenage boys like about the riding atire! ! Was then expecting it to say on women.

Sorry op! I think you will look just fine if anyone does say anything just mention all the top male riders eg Tony McCoy, Carl Hester, Mark Todd, Andrew Nicholson etc :)
It might be worth speaking to the riding club leaders if you're feeling a bit self conscious of the beige jodhpurs to see if they will let you wear a darker colour teamed with a smart tweed jacket or shirt?
I think you'll get lots of admiring girls there (thinking of this forum whenever a man posts! !) Just enjoy yourself and impress them with your riding :) is there anyone from your yard who would maybe go with you to the first session just so you're not completely alone?

Seriously, don't worry. You definitely won't look like a plonker :)
Still, better to be a bit nervous and awkward than over confident and cocky, trust me, that won't do you any favours either!
You're doing fine, keep at it, you won't regret it!

You will not look daft being the only boy. It is true there is more girls than boys in riding but that does not matter it is equal and all on skill. There are quite a few teenage boys on my yard they dress the same as most of the girls in jodhpurs and joules polo tops. Maybe now there is one boy others will join your riding club. You could join the promotion efforts and try to recruit some.

There's only one boy on our riding club team which is always a bit of a novelty, I think he is a wee bit bored of it being pointed out all the time though :P Could you take a wee trip out to some junior type events theres usually loads of boys SJ and eventing might make you feel a bit more comfortable.

I don't have opinion other than I'd think it's great there are other blokes riding (I'm a bloke!). I seriously wouldn't worry about it. I didn't start riding until my mid-thirties; now I'm glad to say it's the best thing I have ever done. I happily wear boots and breeches as do all the other male riders I know. No one judges you, after all it's just sports clothing. Men AND women can look good or bad in riding gear but at the end-of-the-day it serves a practical purpose. When I started out I rode in jeans and wellies; even at my age it was a step to move to boots and breeches; but when I started jumping I bought all the gear and there was no turning back. Believe me; no-one cares. If anything you'll look less self-conscious by embracing the gear and being confident about it. Good luck mate. Enjoy!

when i was a teenager i thought teenage boys in jods were hot! we all did and there was ALOT of competition between us silly girls to date the only boy on the yard who had horses! lol
now im old i still think men in jods and that ride in general are hot!

As everyone's said - you probably look amazing to all the girls you ride with. I'm too old for a teenage boy but I think men my age in jodhpurs look awesome ;) A lot of girls ride at your age, but when you get older, you'll find there are a lot more men in the sport and the numbers even out. Remember riding was originally a thing for men to do - not women. We're lucky history went the way it did and now everyone can enjoy horse riding. But it's not a girly sport by any means and even the clothing was originally developed by men, for men... Think of the clothes the men at the Spanish Riding School wear. It's only recently that women were allowed to take part in that at all!

When I was a teenage girl, I loved teenage boys in their riding gear :P

Now I'm a little older, I still love boys in riding attire...only boys my own age and older hehe! Don't worry, you'll do fine :)

You won't look like a plonker! It's no different than turning up for footie in shorts, or for swimming in trunks. It's a sport, so you wear the appropriate gear, everyone does it!

If you feel self-concious you could always wear more jockey style "jods"?

Although I'm not sure if Pony Club would go all "PC on you" so to say. A long boots are cool.. I wish I had a pair of long boots!

Have fun and walk away if people are staring. At the end of the day I always think I am there to compete.. I am polite but I don't tend to chat a lot as I am usually hanging on for dear life but I can't speak for you.

Hi,I've worn jods from teenage to now. Just clothes I wear wetsuit to surf in so don't be worried what people think.see my album for pics of me in my jodhpurs

To be honest it was what everyone wore, I didn't even notice half the time! We had 2 boys on our yard and they lived in jodphurs and breeches. Dark for yard work and normal riding, a darker beige for competitions. Noone paticularly commented :)

Just don't wear brightly coloured undies and you will be fine! :D

Although there might be a lot more girls, believe me, quite a few of them will be feeling as self-conscious as you. I regularly had the following thoughts at pony club (and in life in general) between the ages of about 13 and 17.

Do my thighs / bum look big in these?
Have I got a muffin top?
Are my boobs jiggling about too much when I do rising trot?
Do I look too short in long boots?
Am I too old for jodhpur boots?
Can you see my pants / bra through my jods/top?
Why can't I be skinny like x/y/z?
Why do even my fingers look fat? (I still think this one 20 years later!)

Anybody who says they don't / didn't care about the way they look as a teenager is lying. It's just something we've got to go through, sorry! You've had lots of tips on different clothes to wear so have a look at your options and choose what you're most comfortable with.

There were only a couple of boys at my pony club and they pretty much had their pick of the girls so look at it as an opportunity! We were all very jealous when one of them, who was very good looking picked, one of the girls over everybody else. He treated her very badly though and then nobody wanted him. How you act it so much more important. Be kind and smiley and they won't care what you're wearing.

Yip, Annagain sums it up perfectly, heck most of the above still applies to me now lol !! My 12 year old lad has just started riding again at our local riding stables, and he doesn`t care what anyone thinks, he wears black/navy jods, one of his many Joules Polo T-shirts and his jod boots and chaps ;)
