Last night we found a very skinny scrawny injured greyhound in our garden. We live on a farm and frequently have cats dumped. Presuming either been coursing and got lost or dumped, I shut him in our garage and called the dog warden. He asked us to take to our local vets which my partner did. Amazingly they found a microchip! He was registered at an address in Warrington, Cheshire. We are in Cambridgeshire. Brilliant we thought, perhaps stolen to course down here? Why would illegal hate coursers microchip their dogs??
Anyway, imagining a wonderful reunion with his owners I thought I'd give the vets a ring today to see what happened.
A weird phone all ensued. I asked what happened, they said his owners had collected him. I said were they pleased to see him? Errrr yeah.... I asked did they say why he was so far from home? No.
It was a very cagey and weird conversation and left me wondering what had happened. Thoughts?!

Hmm does sound a bit strange. If that had been my dog I would have asked the vet for your details so I could get in touch and thank you. Not got any clue really as to why the vets wouldnt at least tell you a bit more.

There's been so many dogs missing n list atm
ESP whippets ( I help with a whippet rescue so hear of so many if this breeding )
My foster whip atm was straying around our town for two weeks before getting caught
I've had almost 4 wks now ,whilst doglost vets etc were all informed no one has reported her missing
No chip or id altho she's chipped now through our rescue and will b rehome in time

I can't justify why some aren't bothered whether these sort of dogs are lost or dumped

You of thought the owners if that greyhound would if said thx
You just don't know which is a shame
The greyhound may of coursed n didn't make the grade anymore n was dumped ,,sad eh

Poor thing. He was very thin and dirty and had a cut paw. I can only hope he had one night of comfort and food. Half wish I hadn't handed him in now if he's gone back to coursers :(

You done what u thought was best so don't feel too hard on ya self
Not all coursers n workers of hounds are treated badly
I know of some who are worked n are in loving families
I lure course my whippets but they are pets first n I would never b giving them up

I think my foster may of coursed, she's v nervy n hav a scars but now starting trust n gain confidence
Hope the dog gets treated well by its owners
Poor little mite eh !!

The reason the vets did not tell you any more is because they are bound by client confidentiality and therefore not allowed to give out any information without owners consent.

I don't think the owners would be classed as clients tho,so no client conf? They just came to collect the dog? And surely it would've been courtesy to the good-deed-doer to let her know how the reunion went-doesn't exactly inspire someone to do the same thing again...hey ho...nowt so queer as folk... :-/

Whilst the animal is under the care of the practice ,even if that is for 5 mins then they are legally clients and therefore benefit from client confidentiality.

I wasn't asking for any personal details, just if the dog had got reunited and curious as to why it was so far from home in a state. The person who I spoke to on the phone knew straight away about the dog as she immediately said the owners had collected it. It was the cagieness

Oops
.....that made me wonder. I'm not expecting great thanks or anything I was just really curious about the dog. The vets made me think there was more to the story that's all. But hey ho - I agree, nowt as queer as folk!

Personally I would have expected them to have contacted you to thank you or at the least ask the vet to pass it on. Its quite possible the person you spoke to wasnt actually involved and hadnt seen the reunion but would have been aware of the case.

The fact you think they were cagey might have been because they didnt expect you to ring so were blindsided or they were not impressed with the owners. Either way you deserved thanks but unfortunately good manners are not possessed by everyone.

Pretty much all the working sight hound owners I know treat their dogs really well. I have racing lurchers and wouldnt have any issue taking them rabbiting etc, and they are the most spoilt dogs I know! I have just been up to turn the electric blanket on for them as they are both asleep in my bed and my dog loves the electric blanket :D

If I lost my young dog somehow it wouldnt take very long for him to look thin and unloved. Hes in perfect condition and 15kgs of solid muscle and the fittest dog my vet has ever seen. But after 24 hours he'd start to lose condition as hes not a good dooer and has an incredibly fast metabolism. He'd be stressed as well as hes a sensitive little flower and that wouldnt help! So might not be sinister at all :)
