just wondering if anyone can help, if you've read my other post u'll know that i was havin trouble gettin my four year old into a nice canter anyway we cracked it and now another problem, he loves jumping and i mean goes crazy to do a tiny cross pole but he is controllable but he rushes abit do you guys think that puting some poles before the jump would help him to slow down and get his stride right. If not has anyone got any ideas?
any advice will help thanks x

Can't help-sorry-put can I suggest you put this in comp riders? There's quite a few ppl that go in there who have good training ideas etc.

Bother - just typed you a reply and the computer lost it, so in bullet points this is what I thought...

- placing pole=good idea, lots people do this
- try making 'course' of jumps/poles on floor so there are lots of things for him to think abt, not too much focus on just the one jump
- similarly don't take a straight line towards it from miles off
- something I did in little indoor arena the other day for variety: canter long side, transition to trot on short side, trot long side with jump on it, transition to canter on short side, repeat! That way approaching a jump requires slowing down (just something I was playing with so prepared to be told this is a BAD idea that will teach refusals or something)
- loose schooling over jumps might teach him to think for slef a bit too

- I know v little abt jumping but share horsey loves it so I'm learning!

Not really my field of expertise BUT........
I saw a demo by Oliver Townend a few weeks ago and he suggested that for overly keen horses you take them up to the jump then stop them, turn them away and come again so they are listening to you and not anticipating.
I was sceptical as I thought this might encourage them to stop at jumps. But, who am I to argue with an expert
