Do any of you have a 3.5T horsebox on a medium wheel base....??

I have a 15.2H heavy type who is around 650kg and a very fussy horse who hates travelling backwards..!! I know that most of the newer 3.5t conversions are set up for 2 horses, rear facing with living at the back etc to save space, but this isn't an option for us -he just cant get on with the balance thing and has had to have physio treatment everytime he gets on one (god only knows why he is not the norm as many travel fine this way) but he hates it to the point where he wont get on one but is happy to get on a trailer or herringbone type. He is also claustrophobic on the van conversions again rear facing so would have to be a coachbuilt box type..

I was ideally looking for a forward facing or herringbone style but have noticed that most of these types have a living section and therefore don't leave you much payload on a 3.5T, some I have seen as little as 700/800kg left:eek:

Anyway to cut a long story short, I have seen a great deal on a luton box Coachbuild van that is 4 years old and only done 25,000, the measurements inside the box are 10.5ft long, 7ft wide, and 8ft high.....but its a medium wheel base.....I would only be travelling him it and not bothered about the living as he is fairly heavy I would rather make sure that it is all properly reinforced and comfortable for him which will add a lot of weight then scrimp on the saftey to try to squeeze 2 on it or a small living....so would rather have some spare weight left then a living section.

To give you a visual It looks like a marlborough type box but on a MWB and I was thinking of setting it out as rear load, travelling him in middle, kinda like a trailer set up and then put a ramp to the front/side for unloading. I thought if I kept it simple as forward motion for on and off, it will make life easier for both of us, as he can sometime sqush me when he panics on one when we have to do a lot of manovering on and off etc...

Will a MWB be adequate with these dimensions for just for the horse area, or would I be better to go for a LWB anyway even though I dont require living...??

Thanks for your help...baileys and galaxy choc for those still here..xx:D

The vehicles you are talking about with the low payload are usually the older 3.5T chassis. This is because they are built on a chassis and it is the chassis that is increasing the weight of the vehicle. The newer 3.5Ts will give 1200kgs payload, it is nothing to do with the live-in, it is the lighter, lower chassis. You can not build a rear load Master or Movano because the wheel boxes intrude into where the grooms areas are. This is one of the reasons the grooms area are built at the back, the most important reason being to keeping an even weight over both axels.

Thanks for your reply thats why I was thinking of putting him in the middle with the wheel arches either side I measured the space between wheel arches and its about 5 foot......that way he would be forward facing in the middle over both axels....or would that not work.....??

Thanks X

Would you not be better off with a forward facing trailer?

I cant pull one due to when i passed my license...so thought a 3.5t would be the better option......plus my last 4x4 cost me a fortune in upkeep - so much went wrong with it it was constantly in the garage....and i had to keep asking a a friend to drive for me when we had the trailer on and now didn't want to have to rely on others to take me out to shows etc......thought with a 3.5t i would just be able to load and go ....thanks..x

That is different, it would work but you would need two ramps. One at the back to load and one at the front to unload. You would also need two partitions therefore turning the lorry into a 1 horse lorry. You would need to consider resale value of the vehicle. Give a local (trusted) coach builder a ring and have a chat with them.
Whether you got a medium or a long wheelbase would only give you approx. 75kgs weight difference. The medium wheel base may make the front ramp tight.

So I take it that there are not many people that would want transport for one horse, even if the only have one..? I suppose it doesn't really bother me as I have the one and would be overweight with another as he is so heavy himself......so you think it may well be hard to sell on again if needed in the future as I would have tailor made it to me and to suit my one horse..?

Thanks
