Basically, I have the worst luck and my horse had KS surgery last year and a lameness claim, which almost 5k later turns out to be navicular and he is now ill, not sure what is wrong but he has had 5 vet visits this week, 3 of which are out of hours and he is probably going to further tests to find out what is wrong :( I am not sure what to do, he is insured but are they going to think I am taking the mick, it will be his third claim in 2 yrs :( thoughts please I am at my wits end :(

Hiya, sorry your having a bad time with it all , just claim thats what its there for, in one year I had four different claims going on with my horse everything was really bad and I lost him in the end but insurance company was fantastic , I was with NFU . Best of luck my fingers are crossed for you . Xx

How gutting for you. :(

Agree with the above though, don't worry about your insurance: that's what it's there for and whatever you present them with they'll have seen worse! Insurance is all about swings and roundabouts, some clients have multiple claims, some none, you're having an unlucky period. Do what you need to do for your boy and let the insurance company earn their money. The time will come when they get years' worth of premiums from you without needing to lift a finger :)

Im sure NFU will be fine, it does seem to be one thing after another when things go wrong, I know its horrible all you want is everything better, again good luck . X

Mild colic symptoms and off food, he started on the Monday, still the same on the Friday, no worse, no better, low WBC count and high amyloid A, vet is thinking pain somewhere in his abdomen but not really sure, poss ulcers but he doesn't really have any other ulcer symptoms, poor lad :(

Bless him. And poor you, how depressing. Though good to hear he seems to be rallying!
Those results suggest inflammation somewhere, and possible viral / bacterial infection... If he's sore around his abdomen it could well be ulceration / inflammation in the intestine / colon, especially if he's also colicky... I wouldn't worry about expecting to see other ulcery symptoms, mine had none apart from being reactive / sensitive around her barrell. Ate well, pooed perfectly, glossy coat, held weight great, etc etc...

Argh would be good if they could talk!

Is he eating again now? Do you have him on a good probiotic? Protexin Gut Balancer is a good one. I know they're all supposed to have the same stuff in them, but I do think this one's higher quality. You could try some Coligone too - it's mainly an antacid which may help, esp if he's not eating much bless him.

He is eating now as he is on Bute currently, just weaning him off now, thanks for that, very helpful, I have just brought him some probiotics, he finishes his antis tomorrow so will start course then. It's a bit of a mystery but I am not ruling out ulcers as he has had quite a lot of stress, back and forwards to the blooming vets and up to leahurst for an MRI :(

Poor sausage. One other thought: I know we already know bute use over the medium to long term can cause ulceration / gut issues, and I know humans are very different from horses, but I was prescribed an NSAID when I first broke my shoulder and good lord did it make my guts feel horrific! Massive cramps, really horrid. It also made me feel oddly flat and depressed in little waves which exactly mirrored the time when the dose was kicking in. It did make me think about how it's perfectly feasible NSAIDs give some horses less chronic but just as uncomfortable gut ache, or make them feel flat. They can develop sensitivities at any time. Not saying this is the case with your lad, but it's something I'll consider carefully next time, rather than assuming it'd always make her feel better.

A good probiotic on stress dosage is a great idea when they're on antibiotics too, especially if they might have slightly weedy gut fauna.

I hope you get some improvement soon!

I agree about the Bute, I saw some pics of ulcers caused by Bute after only a few days, shocking really! He is on the Bute at the moment due to the discomfort he was in, it has worked in that he is now eating and well in himself, not sure what will happen when he comes off it :( need to speak to vet but couldn't get hold of him today. Thanks for the advice, much appreciated, hopefully he will be back on form soon and give the NFU a break for 5 mins!
