Did have an Ifor 510, just sold it (good choice defo recommend mine was 7 years old has held up really well and sold before being advertised :p) as had a lorry built. Used to pull with two different vehicles either my mitsubishi sport shogun 2.5l diesel or the Merc MLCDI 480(?). Mitsi was more than capable of towing even with 2 horses in, but was easier with the automatic merc just pulling off etc as do a lot more mirror checks when towing and no worries about pulling off smoothly particularly when first starting to tow :). The merc also had more power so was better for going up hills with 2 in the back than the mitsi. Both had 4 wheel drive but the mitsi had a special lowrange option and I had half offroad tyres on it so was better offroad/ in muddy conditions :). You will be more limited on towing vehicle choices with a bigger trailer like a 510 so check each vehicles max towing weight carefully :).

Nissan X-Trail......LOVE IT, and it can get through mud better than Landies and Rangies, as proven at Blenheim the other year when it was rained off on XC day!

I used to tow with a 2002 Nissan Terrano 2.7TD - it was an amazing tow car, very capable and also brilliant in snow and mud (think tractor in disguise - and they are about that comfortable too...). However, it did start to cost me to keep, mainly suspension problems through regular towing (Equitrek and cob at least once a week up and down the peak district) I went through CV joints like sweeties, had the prop shaft repaired twice and a few other bits and bobs. Engine wise though, I am convinced it will outlive us all.

I sold it when I bought my maxi cob - he weighs almost 800kgs and the trailer weighed 1250kgs - so the whole lot together, although legal (within the 2800kgs specified towing capacity) was too heavy for the kerb weight of the car (which isn't that heavy as far as 4X4's go and only weighed approx 1900kgs) I could have ended up with the "tail wagging the dog" in the event of an emergency stop or swerve etc so now I have a lorry for the big beastie and a little blingy new "cheap as chips to run" car.

My advice would be that whilst recommendations are good, do your own maths and research for towing capacity and kerb weights of suggested vehicles - lots of people tow with and then recommend to others, vehicles that aren't actually physically heavy enough to remain heavier than the trailer when it is loaded, which is unsafe and some even tow outside of the vehicles specified towing capacity - which is illegal and will invalidate your insurance - so beware :)

If it has the word Rover on it anywhere walk away, had 2 Terrano's both tow fine, mines comfy with leather easy to keep clean and aircon ect, and it does about 30mpg running about, best of everything, later one's do have electronic speedo problems, made in Mexico or something stupid.

We tow a 510 with an 02 3 litre Terrano. Makes an easy job of towing both boys :)

Leather option well worth seeking out for ease of cleaning!

Nissan Navara atm but looking to change as I hate it!

It`s bouncy, uncomfortable and very expensive to fix. As someone else has pointed out, it also has a HUGE turning circle. With my Richardson Supreme Ultra on the back it`s a massive rig, over 30ft long!

Looking to go for a SWB next :)

But can`t decide which!

I hope all that posted in this thread have a full B+E licence because I did not see any posts which conformed to towing with a B licence

But then I might need to go to specsavers !!

Any reasons behind not touching a Landrover make??

Towed IW 510 with two horses with 3 terranos - mixture of LWB and SWB - all great.

Now tow with a Jeep Grand Cherokee 3.1L Auto and its fab.

Dabbled with a Daihatsu fourtrack and hated it but some rave over it, so I guess its personal choice and maybe the age of the vehicle as mine was a £600 banger.

Currently have a 06 Mitsubushi Shogun Sport, huge boot space, and rear door opens upwards so better access to boot, leather interior so cleans easily. I find it thirsty, it dies on the hills, have to use the 4WD option as soon as you go on damp grass but other than that i have had it for 18months and not a problem with it.

Before that i had a 99 Terrano II SWB, brilliant towing machine, never got stuck in any terrain, very rarely had to put it into 4WD, generally no issues just general up keep of an older car, brake pipes, exhaust etc but parts reasonably priced, down side of the SWB model is the tiny boot, regularly left the back seats folded down to make room.

towing IW505 with 16.2 sports horse.

Izuzu Trooper - old but reliable and as it is 3.1l it can tow two big horses and atrailer easily :D

The comment I asume was because Range Rovers and Land Rovers are reknowned for going wrong and being expensive therefore to maintain. That said parts are inexpensive and they are very popular so it's from a large ownership base that the 'problems' arise.
