we've got a mare that lacks muscle in the back and the saddle she came with is simply way too narrow! my mares saddle is wider and a better fit however is lower at the back, (obviously it sits into where there is no muscle!) and of course is fine for my own horse as shes got a nice muscled back (looove riding in a field with a hill!).
so, could we use our old prolite that you can put inserts into to ensure the saddle sits level and make up for the lack of muscle along her back just so we can start walking her up the hills on our yard.
what do you think ?

I really like Prolites.

I have an old pony who has a dipped back, we have struggled to get a saddle to fit her as she is very much in between sizes (wide-xw). So the saddler agrees with me to use a Prolite gel wither pad (shaped like an oval shape) in between her numnah and the saddle, just to raise the front up a little.

With the hill work and long, slow distances, her back is beginning to muscle up a bit :)

ah okay. will see how it fits with my mares saddle and the prolite then :) thanks :)

My horse's saddle fits his shoulder width and I use the prolite to fill the muscle wastage behind his shoulders/withers. If I don't fit to his shoulders, everything I put on him gets pushed back.

I'm using one at the moment to lunge my boy in. His saddle is made to measure but he's had to have over a year off due to his repeated tying up/subsequent muscle damage so the top line isn't there. The prolite just fills in that gap whilst allowing him to muscle into it.

I use this instead of a prolite IMO it's better as can be used without numnah and although is sheepskin no one can tell you have dead sheep under you saddle.

I use it as my boy is lacking in muscle although we have saddler coming out in a few weeks in the hope we can stop using it. :)

ahh interesting-going to be trying the mare tomorrow in the prolite and if that doesnt work out i'll let the owner know about that pad :) thanks x

I use my prolite pad with my HM tree free saddle for everyday riding and jumping as my horse has wife a dipped back and saves it from dipping forward onto his withers. For my GP treed saddle I use a prolite numnah with grippy underneath as he is also croup high and it saves me from ending up his withers

QR the way too narrow saddle will be responsible for the wastage. My lad had massive sockets behind the shoulder, I got a made to measure and beautifully softly padded saddle fitted to him and me by a very old artisan as opposed to one of these new fangled trained-in-three-days people who've swallowed some marketing. Back now muscled up so well under saddle area, it's virtually flat. I think your idea of using a prolite as a soft gap-filler is sound.

we're not quite sure what saddle she was in-she came from a dealer who can 'fit saddles' but as stated mare came with a saddle narrower than the one my 13.3 wears! so yeah will now try my mares saddle with the prolite and see how she goes. then hopefully when saddler comes out there'll be no more problems!

only just seen this, but agree that the prolite is a good way to get you started working her and muscling her up without having to splash out on a saddle just yet when in time she may fit into your other horse's saddle.

i really dislike prolites and the other protypes of them.. because 90% of people use them because a saddle is ill fiting and no other reason and it narks me.. if it doesnt fit.. dont use it!

we only rode her in it once we were sure it would fit well, and it does. it is only very temporary before the saddler can come out fit her her very own saddle. if she was still unhappy then that would be tough nuts and she would have to wait for the saddler :)

just to show the improves: lower head carriage and shes able to stretch/move freely. oh and i know i'm looking quite fat for riding but i'm working on it!
