i just wondered - not about hi-viz or technical safety stuff - but what do you wear day to day if you are a horsey mum? is it a blessing - you dont have to think about what to wear on the school run *should i put a belt with that* or a curse - even if you do try you look like a p**** l****** according to the OH. i have winter and summer uniforms and the winter one is horrible - like that old boy on the fast show that comes out of the shed and said "this week i have mostly been eating yoghurt" and the summer one is the same but better but only because i have a tan hahaha!

well in work hours i try and look presentable and my children are old enough to get to school without me BuT winter wardrobe is not a good look outdoors i wear waterproof overtrousers, puffa jacket and either a buff or horseware headband to keep the ears warm and muck boots . Glamorous i am not . Summer is a bit better, jeans, polo shirt ,gillet and dubarrys ,but im too old to care really .comfort is everything.

I chipped in on your other post, but thought of one thing my mum did which was embarrassing beyond belief (although very very funny too!). It was my parents evening at my new 6th form, and on their way there my parents stopped off and fed the horses (I had stayed at school). Mum mixed the feeds with her hands, chucked the buckets into the stables, leapt in the car and only just got to my first appointment on time. As they were talking, I could smell horse feed. Looked at mum and saw her hands. Caked in chaff and sugarbeet. Mum saw where I was staring and promptly sat on her hands, but the damage was done and the parents evening was a write off- we giggled the whole way through!

haha! i always have to sit on my hands too! i hope my daughter will also find it funny when she's older but i remember a day about 5 years ago, torrential rain all day, the air ambulance came out for a friend and i got soaked to the skin waiting for it. then rushed to school where all the other mums were blow dried and immaculate under big umbrellas from hedge funds or something similar and i looked like id just crawled out of a bog. tasia (5 at the time) came out of the gate and went "oh mum!". she hates it when i pick her up in the lorry too!

When I first started picking up stepson from school when I first got together with his dad (he was 7) one of his friends asked him "does your stepmum have any other clothes but jodpurs?" Luckily my stepson thought it was funny rather than embarrassing. I used to lurk at the back when he was at junior school/ Thankfully now he gets the bus home!

Am laughing at you picking her up in the lorry! When I was at primary school, a friend's mum picked her up on her horse - with her 12h pony on the leadrein! We were all very impressed and jealous.

sorry bit off the question and hi-jacking the thread but how do you pronounce your daughters name? and where did you get it from? i ask because my name is tasiah (ta see ah) and i've never really known of anyone with a name similar to mine. mines a shortened version of the greek anatasia. just curious

Mostly denim jods, t shirt and ariats so I sort of blend in. I do have several coats tho so I'll have my mucky one that's muddy and smells of Haylage then a clean one for the school run.

Can I play on this thread?? I'm not a mum but I do arrive at work in ariat type boots, sprint across the car park in dirty trainers and keep my 'work' shoes in my desk drawer, also do the asda run in jods or jeans or joggers, caked in god knows what and muddy boots with jacket sporting suspicious stains. OH hates going places with me at weekends as I am dressed like this!! (currently working overtime, sat at desk in jods and hoody with damp knees coz I rode before work and my chaps leaked!!)

Last time we went DIY shopping he complained about my attire then decided we needed something that came in a very dusty heavy bag and he couldn't get that dust on his top, was actually quite pleased when I carried it!

My OH says I look like worsel gummidge! If I pick her up from school after doing the horses I am normally wearing old tracksuit bottoms, mucky light blue wellies and a hi-viz "council" jacket. When I drop her off its a different story - smart work suit, not a hair out of place!

:) very funny reading this.

I live in my jods whether it be summer or winter. In winter I always wear a hat and admit I look stupid, don't care though as warmth and comfort is priority. I have a few coats, one that absolutely stinks of horses and the other is a bit more presentable. I just swap coats and shoea if I have to go out :)

Drop son off at Primary school looking reasonably presentable in jeans and trainers but frequently pick him up in filthy muddy boots and a coat covered in who knows what :p Luckily the teachers etc have known me for years and expect me to look like that :D . On the rare occasion I go to a Fayre or something they have been known to comment that I can brush ok :o :p :D

High school is a whole different ball game and when I go for parents evenings etc I make sure I look presentable even if I am wearing jeans :p I do get vaguely irritated by the 'just walked out of the hairdressers/catwalk/watching out for model scouts' look of some of the other parents though. Does that make me some kind of reverse snob :D

That sounds like something my mum would do - last parents evening she turned about in her tweed coat with the sweet aroma of cheval no5 on it.

Luckily a number of pupils/teachers are fairly horsey :o

I have a selection of coats that work their way through the washing machine on a regular basis, which i regard as my "horse coats", one particularly fetching one I bought for 99p from Ebay. My 14 year old daughter refuses to go anywhere with me when I am wearing it although my 9 year old doesn't seem too bothered and the dogs don't care at all!!! I have been know to collect 14 year old from school wearing it (if it is clean) it's worth it for the entertainment value when she sees me!!!;)

parents evenings present me with all different kinds of problems because i dont have any grown up clothes - its either horsey ie scruffy or party frocks. i try to pick something out with the least bling but even so i am always massively ridiculously over dressed! i keep meaning to buy a pair of shoes with a heel less than 4" high!

Loving the "Cheval No 5"! Must remember that! At work (am cabin crew) we call the aircraft smell "Eau de Boeing". So even though I stink one way or another, I can give the stinks nice names!

Jeans, Polo Shirt, Dubarry Boots, Fleece/Gilet thingy. The jeans are substituted with shorts or denim skirt in summer.

Quilted Overtrousers, Wellies, smelly old coat/anorak/jacket. I always have trouble having a coat in the back of the land rover that is fairly clean and not smelly, they all seem to end up dirty and stinking :(

I am trying really hard at the moment (a new year resolution) to remember to clean off my boots before I leave the yard, so they are not covered in mud/bedding/whatever when I call in at the shops and I look marginally more respectable... It is beginning to turn into a habit thankfully.

The smell is harder to do something about though... Terrible when its raining.

The hi viz jacket has been forbidden by the kids from the school pickup.

went to an entrance exam a few saturdays ago on the way to the yard. eldest son took the exam a few years ago and we just dropped him off in the car park with the head of senior school and prefects. unfortunately this time we were parked up and invited in for coffee and pastries. i had breeches and tuffa boots and a vest top that says SWEET MUSIC - i dont know why - its about a million years old from top shop and no one would have seen it but i had to leave my toggi jacket in the car because it would probably smell indoors with central heating! so that was good! the funny thing is most of the - very unhorsey - dads were wearing joules polo shirts!
