Hello all! I’m looking to get back to working with horses after almost 20 years. While I work on getting back to riding, I am keen to work with a horse out of the saddle through groundwork, in-hand work and natural horsemanship techniques.

As I’m starting from scratch with clothes/gear/boots etc, what would you recommend getting for this type of work?

What type of surface / arena is best for this type of work?

Bonus, if you know of anyone within 30mins of Letchworth who may be open to this type of arrangement or a trainer in these techniques who has a client horse I could work with, I would sincerely appreciate a message. I’m hoping to progress to hacking and light schooling (no jumping) in time so it would be ideal to find a narrow-bodied horse to work with from the start, such as an Arabian, but that is not essential. A horse I can work with out of the saddle only would be lovely too.

Thanks so much for your time and advice!

Hard hat, gloves and short boots for in-hand work. Depending on how hot it is either shorts or leggings/jogging bottoms/breeches/jeans (take your pick) and polo shirt of long sleeved top.

Can't help you re surface though.
