What does BHS actually provide?

The BHS Trec GB championships were this weekend - the BHS website does not appear to have noticed far less published results! No doubt H&H will ignore it too - well it isn't eventing so why put it in H&H??

The BHS RC Quadrille of the year is just as bad with practically no coverage and no photographs of what amounts to a colourful spectacle.

The complete lack of any action (cooperation!!!) when the trail bikes and 4x4 fanatics reclassified so many of our bridleways means that there is now no safe off-road riding in my local area.

The office staff are often unhelpful and sometimes downright rude when they are contacted for information.

So someone, help me please, what do we actually get for our membership cost?

Sorry rant over but really!!!

I don't understand what you mean? The results are on the BHS website, (http://www.bhs.org.uk/sitecore/cont...REC/Results/BHS_TREC_League_Results_2010.aspx )& full coverage will no doubt appear in British Horse magazine. A press release for the Quadrille was issued & was picked up by some of the equestrian press, along with the full feature in the BRC magazine 'Rider'.
What Horse & Hound choose to publish (or not) is up to them & the BHS cannot be held responsible if they decide not to cover some events.
As for what the BHS does, well they have a very active horse welfare department that was instrumental in getting Carrot & Spud to safety where other charities had failed. The access department has prevented hundreds of miles of off road riding being lost to us, & the they are the lead body for qualifications within the equstrian industry.
So quite a lot really.............

Well I'll sit on the fence on this one a bit!!

On a plus side yes they do alot for bridleways etc, and yes it is good that they have a welfare line to offer advise etc, the insurance is good too.

On a negative side, their exam system regarding updating examiners is a little outdated, their welfare officers aren't always upto the scratch and have been known to send another charity out to a call and they took the credit for it!!! And as for being a central area for information, I recently wanted to know about the legalities of towing a friends horse for her and whether I would need a transporters certificate? Could I find anything about it on their website??? You guessed it no!!

But with regard to the listing of results I wouldn't know, as I don't frequent the site, sorry, but well done if you were involved. xx

Hmmm -the results have indeed gone up.....this afternoon. And you can find them, after 8 clicks through the website searching hard - not exactly headline news! This is one of the few sports actually run by BHS so you would expect more of an effort to profile it.

Don't rely on the insurance - if you have household insurance this will be used to offset any claim through BHS so many people find they receive no benefit from BHS.

I still feel this is hugely expensive as what is effectively a welfare donation.

So if you wanted to find something in a book would you expect it to fall open on the page that you wanted?
At the end of the day it's not compulsory to be a member. If you think it's too expensive don't join. Simples !

The BHS is a charity, which aims to help horses, and the majority of work/events around the country are organised by Committees of volunteers. Likewise the welfare representatives, the access and bridleways reps and so on.
So, RandR what do YOU actually do? Sometimes it would be nice if people thought about what they could give, rather than what they can take/get.
S :D

Years ago in this area someone took the trouble to get "statements" for people with regard to possibly opening up an old track, to say that they'd used it for very many years - she then sent this infroamtion off to the BHS Bridleways Officer who did sweet FA with it, result = we didn't ever get our track classified as a bridleway.

Also, I know there has to be a norm set somewhere, but, honestly, some people who've got BHS quals are totally useless when you get them near a horse; I had someone riding mine who was supposed to be BHS qualified up to the hilt: she was totally useless, couldn't ride for toffee and fell off repeatedly!

I'm sure the BHS do a lot of good work, but I think they need to get in the real world to be honest.

Shilsdair - I run events which raise approx £5k a year split between ILPH (now WHW) and the RDA, I do voluntary work for a support group for one of our equine rare breeds and I reguarly help with the local branch of the pony club, I help with the local team who clear bridleways, oh yes and have a full time job and 2 horses - so, actually, rather more than the entire local branch of the BHS, which runs one open meeting if we are lucky. So yes I do feel entitled to comment and where do you get off suggesting that I don't contribute anything - I throw the question back at you - what do YOU do?

If British Eventing effectively hid the results of the British Open would you think that was appropriate?

If the BHS is no more than a welfare agency or a charity it should promote itself as such and the office staff should stop being so rude or far more of us will vote with our wallets.
