Cannot believe what you have to pay for a decent horse these days. Its crazy...I dont want a three day eventer. Just a all rounder for my daughter.
I tell you I could write a book on what Ive seen this weekend ......and some of the stories Ive heard!!

It could easily buy you a nice unbacked cob??? But of course that means you putting the work in before it would be an all-rounder. Saying that Bodey has been backed a year and 4 months and I would say he is an all-rounder (the coloured in my sig).

ive just sold my mare, 100% box shoe vet etc. grade c with winnings, and placed both times out dressage.
very moody at times and has food agression (i got her ok with me, but new people will have to start over) sold with everything baring a saddle, 3.5k.

i have my lipizzaner on at 4.5k, with full wardrobe. i expect to get 4 k for him.

they are out there, but i think they take some finding, and be prepared to travel

Nice although my daughter needs to be out having fun , had considered the youngster option. need something forward, confident and straightforward....doesnt need to be a superstar. Have to say the dealers are raking it in, surely buying for 1500 quid and telling you they dont have anything for less that 4k.

I'm waiting until later in the year when hopefully prices might start coming down due to the imminent weather change. I will also have about £3-4k and I don't hope to find anything within the first 3-6 months of looking! Prices are just so ridiculous at the moment.

£3500 would pay for my horse 7 times with change

YO has had to drop her prices for her ponies again so the prices are dropping.

paid £3900 for baby Welshie 3mths ago. He's just turned 6, has hunted, working nicely in the school, but spooky out hacking but basically good - goes on his own, in company etc. Doesn't do show-jumps but happy to do XC. He was only the 2nd I saw. Was looking for a few months before finding him. He was for sale at £4500 but that was rather hopeful!

I would sell Oscar for that although I don't think I will be selling him now!

Nice Irish x, jumps well, has hunted and has flashy places....can try it on with napping but aslong as forceful will get through it....does not bolt or rear or buck and is not spooky on hacks.....

I would sell Autumn for that if I was selling her....

16.2hh 10yo TB, excellent to hack, school, no vices, jumps everything you point her at, done BD, BSJA winnings, been hunting, won hunter trials. Not an easy ride as you have to sit dead still and use the exact right aids, imagine a schoolmistress type with a rocket up its bum!!

Has a LOU mark, but as thats for high level eventing shouldn't matter too much. Had the all clear from the vet to do anything we want.

Out of interest do people think that is realistic? I'm starting to think maybe I dont have the time to give her the work she needs and whether she's really the horse for me....

I'll have her, she sounds perfect for me!

I recently sold a 17hh Irish Sport Horse, super nature, 9 years old, was placed 2nd at HOYS and won Dublin but a superficial scar ended his showing career. Fantastic all rounder, eventer type - safest horse on the roads I have ever ridden, lorries, buses, tractors, etc - was fantastic. I sold him for £3250

I think realistically you have to spend about £3500 plus to get a good allrounder. There are some out there cheaper, its just a matter of compromise, eg, something that needs a bit of work on its jumping but is safe on the roads...

When you think that most 'ordinary' foals are selling for £2500 upwards, then £3500 is not a stupid amount to spend on a readymade allrounder - take into consideration the costs involved in keeping and schooling a horse to that standard, and its actually a huge bargin!

Realisitcally a horse that doesn't rear, doesn't buck, isn't spooky, that will jump and do cross country, is good on the roads and will hack alone, load, clip etc - well, the vendor can name their price, because there aren't many genuine 100% allrounders out there.

For £3500 - £4000 you could buy a cob over here. The one I am riding is for about that price and he is 8. A bit lazy but thats due to fatness and is rather foreward going with me. He will take you round cross country and show jumping, clears them by miles! But it light in your hands and will drop on the bit, so he could do dressage and qualified for PUK as a 5year old in his first outing in the WH class. However he plunges (All 4 feet leave the ground) and naps if you are not confident and he knows he can get away with it. However if you are confident he is perfect, but he will try it on.
My mare I bought as a 4year old xracer. She has alot of potential to be an allrounder/eventer type horse. Had done nothing but race before I got her and I got her for £1500

We have looked at all sorts, warmbloods purportedly worth tens of thousands but owner come across hard times bla bla
I tell you, i almost thought about giving up looking, how on earth do you know you have a genuine horse!!! I have a 9 yr old irish mare at home who must be worth her weight in gold, If a dealer was selling her she would be up for at least 6k. I am just gobsmacked at whats out there and the prices they have the gall to ask for....or is it the prices people are prepared to pay?

I paid 6K for my daughters 16hh show jumper she is an excellent mare and they have won a lot together but I doubt I'll get more than my 6k back if that

I agree wth Zoe - compromise Is the key, Many super horses have little faults that may mean nothing to you but put the majority off and reduce the price susbstantially.

A friend has a gorgeous british warmblood gelding. 5 year old, to make 16hh. Broken and schooled by BD judge that has qualified for nationals with her other horses. Good to hack alone or in company and to box, clip etc. Free flowing paces and ready to compete prelim though is immature for his age which is why he has been brought on slowly. Pops a pole nicely. Sounds like the perfect youngster yes? But she has had virtually no interest in him as he cribs at feedtime. Most horses of similar calibre are double the price but no-one is interested in this sweet lttle boy. This wouldn't be for the OP - but is just an illustration that if you compromise you could get something very special for a very good price. I myself got an advanced medium 6 year old for half what he was worth as he was very, very thin, owner going through a horrible divorce so he went to a dealer, and dealer wanted rid as he looked awful. I took a chance and he's the horse of my dreams - so the bargains are out there. Just be patient and think whaqt you could accept and what is essential.

Sorry - do you mean me smiles? Probably being presumptious. I am in east yorkshire. 2 and a half hours from kings cross by fast train (I commute to London for work

Thanks Coffeebean! He is a sweetie and I'll be sad to see him go - particulalry as he pursuaded my 8 year old to come with him past a big bonfire today - think I'd have been in the next county by now if I'd hacked out alone
