Thought I'd ask you guys for some help...
Can't decide what dog I want. I want a dog that can spend all day at the yard with me when I'm working (there is also a very friendly Doberman and Jack Russell there - both Bitches) but not the sort of dog that if it has to spend a few hours without me it will get separation anxiety!
Am I asking a lot?
Any suggestions welcome.
Max £500 - ABSOLUTE max!

Not really that bothered, and thinking about it I spose I could get a dog that was a bit older and be able to take it to meet the horses straight away...

if its purely as a pet id deffo recommend a rescue and you can get purebreds in rescue too

i can see where you are comming from breed wise you need the type of dog to match you

I have 4 staffordshire bull terriers. summing them up i would say they need really firm handling difficult to train unless you are strict but also have lots of affection too they love attention although they are known to be dog aggressive my wee bitch Tara would swan about at the yard all day out hacks etc. very much chewers as pups and are best to be crate trained, need lots of exercise

so that my input! good luck with whatever you get

You must have difficult staffies!! I have 3 staffies and a 6 weeks old litter of 9 pups! I find them very easy to train and laid back, little exercise is required and yes very good with other dogs! And the only thing mine chew are bones! which is allowed! They love being with the horses and play around all day!
Get a staffie there great!!

Do you want a big one or a little one??

Border Terriers are lovely!!!!! I'd recommend that everyone should have one!

I've also got a pointer and mum has a Staff x but they needs a lot company and attention.

I don't like JRT's so much, mums got one of those too.

If you get a breed or type you want in mind and spread the word something should turn up! Get Cala on the case!

I agree they are lovely dogs!!

It depends what the cross is! My mum also has a staff x that is always sleeping(or eating!) they are v intelligent my pups are almost house trained at 6 weeks and rarely have accidents at night! How clever!?!
I want to keep all mine!(but not allowed and have sold most of them!)

Still check out BT's then - although they are very different to a doby!!

What about a whippet?? They are little, sweet and easy to care for??

Buff has hardly done anything in the house since we got her a 6 weeks! Although she did once try to eat her way out of the house!

Not sure what x - what do you think??

Do Whippets get cold easily?! They look the sort that wouldn't be impressed at spending all day out on the yard!

It's true there's not a lot to keep them warm! Probably be ok if they'd got access to somewhere cosy, they do like their comforts and sleep

Mine both wear coats in the coldest weather. The oldest who's 7 will take himself off back into the house when he's had enough, but the 2 yr old will happily occupy himself on the yard and fields.

What's more of a concern is that you really need them to want to be around you/have excellent recall, if you don't want to risk them buggering off over the horizon at the first opportunity

OK - really controversial here, and then I'm going to hide.......

If you keep giving rescue dogs homes there will always be rescue dogs.......If the market dries up then maybe - just maybe - people would be a little more repsonsible about breeding unwanted and under valued dogs?

See? I'm off to hide for about 14 weeks before I dare post again........!

You arent possibly suggesting its RESCUES fault that dogs are being over-bred?

Good god thats the biggest load of balls Ive ever heard - rescues are trying to UNDO the work that indescriminate breeders/owners are doing.

So in answer to your question - you're wrong and I hope that all the people on here that have a lot to do with rescues dont see this and realise that there are opinions like this around.

Ooooh, no no no no no.
I'm sure you can't really think that's the case, or you wouldn't run for cover?!

There will always, always, always be rescues overflowing with needy dogs. If people stop offering homes to these desperate creatures the situation would simply escalate to catastrophic proportions (it's not far off that now), because:

A, dogs end up in rescue for many different reasons, not just over breeding....death, financial problems, becoming homeless, landlord/neighbours objections, relationship break ups, elderly owners going into homes, incompatability, people not wanting to lose face by taking a dog back to its breeder, etc etc etc. Many genuine reasons, many ridiculous reasons.

B, guess what?.....the indescriminate breeders don't give a flying f**k where their surplus dogs end up; the canal, the motorway, who cares? Not their problem. Rescues stopping taking in dogs would certainly not stop them breeding litter after litter for a quick buck.

C, the human race....unfortunately, in my experience, for every good, kind, caring human being there are, and always will be, a disproportionate number of stupid, selfish, irresponsible ignorant a**eholes who will for a variety of reasons perpetuate the problem...'we got a new pup and don't want/have room for this one anymore', 'the kids are bored of it now', 'I'm not havin my dogs balls cut off!', 'she got out one night when she was in season', 'didn't know how much work a pup would be', 'we thought she should have one litter first', 'it's not fast enough anymore'....etc, etc.

D, mans greed: http://www.greyhoundaction.co.uk/ go to factsheets 1,2&7, preferably not while you're having lunch.

There a loads on this site that need homes and lots of staffi x's, we have a rescue staffi x and she spends all day with me, never goes out of my sight, is fabulous with the horses and around the yard and lovely and calm at home, she has never been a problem and thank god we could get her from a rescue where she ended up after some miserable bugger threw her away! and not from some money grabbing puppy dealer.
She is 1/2 whippet and does get quite cold but there are so many coats for dogs these days, she has quite a wardrobe!

Cor, Buffy is gorgeous - Staffie x Ridgeback??

i think with staffs it does deoend on their lines and genetics maybe my post was worded badly. they are extremely intelligent and need trained (IMO) but in my experience have a short attention span. my lot are bred to the more athletic type not show type so do need a lot of exercise and their minds kept busy so they dont get bored. tehy are fantastic dogs, the only other breed id have is a bull mastiff

if you are going to a rescue id go there regularly get to know the people and what you want and hopefully they can match you up with a dog that will suit you and him/her

Re the recall comment i think its of utmost importance, my staffs have excellent recall but they are known for just blanking you every now and again! and they have a naturally high prey drive so if they saw something they wanted to chase in some cases you'd be wasting your breath calling them!

on the whole though, fab dogs, perfect size, short coat, excellent with people kids etc loves cuddles!
