What dogs were these?

I saw two dogs today, no picture sorry. If there had only been one I we would have thought they were mongrels.

They looked like very heavily built long haired border collies with legs that were too short, and they were so heavily docked that there was no tail stump visible.

What were they?

I would agree they sound like Australian Shepherds. They may not have been docked, some are born with natural bobtails.

they are often bob tail which means they are born with no tail and the stump is very short if it is this breed

Yes, I think that was it. They did look as if they simply had no tails. One was a blue merle, the other black and white.

I'm so relieved they weren't docked that short
