hi al i have my chap barefoot and he has been doing really well but im fighting rings on his hooves and he has gone footy again on really stoney ground.he is only out for 5 hrs a day and has hay soaked for 12 hrs when he is in,fed on fast fibre, linseed and mag ox.his white line is not as tight as it should and he has a lot of flare on front hooves, although he is due for a trim.ive run out of ideas as i dont want him in for longer than he is allready and the grass is still really growing!!!i was wondering about a grazing muzzle but never used one before,i would appreciate any ideas :) many thanks.

i'd make him an all-weather turnout that he could live out in 24/7, tbh.
i'd be very very careful about frosty grass at the moment, it's a major problem for horses prone to laminitis... ask any vet.
some horses cope fine with grazing muzzles, others get in a fit of depression about them, so i'd borrow one first. i tried one once on a mare who refused to move with hers on - wouldn't drink, just stood by the gate for hours looking pathetic until i took it off!

How much MagOx do you give? It might be worth increasing it and add some salt as well.

Hoof boots so that you can increase the exercise.

Fast Fibre should be okay but it might be worth trying something like Ruff Stuff from Simple Systems.

Look at a grazing muzzle or a track system so you can limit the grass but maximise movement, better than sectioning off a paddock into a small square.

Get an Insulin Resistance check done.

Get a grass and forage analysis done to see if there's anything that needs supplementing

There will be a reason - if it's not dietary then you need to think about Cushings/IR or even maybe a liver problem - I've seen several of the latter this year.

My girl is 18 yr old NF and has just been diagnosed with IR and has probably had low grade lami for years. Have started her on NAF pink powder senior and Glow and shine (linseed based supplement) and she is better than she has been in years! The combination of herbs in the two are all recommend in endocrine disorders, but cheaper than the pre-mixed supplements!! Worked for us :D
