Does Toto have turnout? As long as he's got adequate turnout, he would be fine without planned exercise for a week (horses generally maintain their fitness for about 2 weeks before the fitness levels start to drop) and I personally wouldn't be too concerned if he missed a few nights days' work (unless of course he's at such a high level of fitness for performance such as racing, that it's crucial).
Or is it a case that Toto is one of those horses that will go nuts if he's not "formally" exercised every day?
Yes, he's actually out 24/7 at the moment, he's normally ridden 5 or 6 times a week, he's quite a good doer so this helps to keep the weight off, he's looking fab at the moment, just the right weight
Although my original post wasn't concerning his fitness levels or anything, just wanted a few ideas on what I could do while I can't ride
Donklet - yeah, well I ride him every other day and and my sis rides him on the days that I don't, so it was my day to ride Toto, but as I can't ride I wanted to do something else, but I'd lunged him the last time I was supposed to ride so wanted something new to do
Oh forgot to add, I did try long-reining, he was brilliant, picked it up straight away and we managed to halt, walk on, rein-back, turn and did a little trot too
