Hi I bought a 12.3hh British riding pony( just like a little thoroughbred) for my daughter in the summer and was told she doesn't need a lot of feed during the winter which she does as already looking like she's loosing weight abit. I've been giving her hifi lite and calm and condition which our old pony had and did fine, she's not really putting much weight on with it. She's ridden regularly, had teeth done, wormed etc so all that's covered just wondered if anyone had any advice on what they'd recommend and how much to give? Thanks :)

Does she get plenty of hay? is she warm enough, riding ponies are generally just like tbs they feel the cold and lose weight easily if not full of forage and reasonably well rugged. To add condition oil or micronised linseed should help.

I'd be filling her full with fibre if she needs condition I'd use Alfa oil and get her on a good supplement, ad lib hay, and something like Speedie beet if she needs that bit more. I'd personally cut out the c&c, but I don't like it.

Hi yes she has plenty of hay but has to be soaked, will prob try haylage too. She is rugged up is stabled and won't be getting her clipped as doesn't sweat up and don't want her to get cold!

I am totally convered by grass nuts, I was going to pts my older companion pony last winter becasuse he struggled to keep weight on - 1 scoop a day, increasing to 2 now temps have dropped and he's positively fat!

I'd probably swop hay for haulage if you can, or a mix of both and ad lib. I'd also try micronised linseed, friend uses it for her two that tend to loose condition in winter.

My friends pony hates calm and condition, think that's more due to the fact it's like fibre paste tho.

You could also try a conditioning cube and some oil, or Alfa oil, my old loan went really scrawny last year and the conditioning cubes and oil helped him gain weight.

ETA: does she get hay in the field? Maybe put some out for her if she doesn't, the grass tends to not be enough at this time of year.

My riding pony does really well on C&C, I was told he needed buckets of feed to keep weight on but having ad lib haylage, c&c with alfa a he stayed well over winter.

my horse was on c&c as a 2yr old, as he was skinny when I got him and he didn't do well on it, swapped to fast fibre and he looked sooo much better!!

how many feeds do you give her a day? maybe just up it so she has an extra feed, swap the high fi light for something more! mine literally have fast fibre and molasses free high fi! ones 3 1/2, ones 28 and the other is a mini shettie and it does them all really well

Firstly congratulations on a great choice, BRP are fab :)

I would also go down the haylage, grass nuts, micronised Linseed and Alfa oil (if the pony can tolerate alfalfa) Copra meal is also supposed to be very good

If planning to show the pony I would consider some conditioning cubes - I use Bailey's no 4 but do know that Frickers Tiny Tots cubes and Topspec are also rated
