Hi
what feed would people recommend for some extra energy but not putting weight on?

Currently fed on mollichaff and argo forage mix with a balancer but moving to new yard where i can do my own feed so was thinking of either hifi or alfa a with a leisure mix?

Going to be doing hunter trials, one day events and general riding club activities starting in 3 week time.

He is reasonably fit at the moment and working on building up fitness more for first hunter trials in 3 weeks.

Any advice greatly appreciated.

No such thing as feeding for energy without putting on weight unless you're going to burn the calories off.
A lot of the Mollichaff feeds are high in sugar, I would swap to a low sugar one, Alfa Oil is molasses free but higher in energy than some of the others.

Make sure you're feeding a vit and min supplement if you're not feeding the recommended daily amount
Getting them fitter often helps with the oomph, but if you have a very laid back cob like mine then not a lot works!

I did have some success with Spillers Instant Response for hacking, but for slow release you could use the Slow Release Cubes.

Definately try getting him fitter first, you should always feed for work done not for work they are going to do.

I feed my lazy cob top spec comprehensive balancer but have to watch his weight carefully. I do rate this balancer and think its given my boy lots more energy then baileys low cal. I have fed red cell in the past which is like rocket fuel.

I used to feed my lazy boy a whole scoop of oats - it did absolutely nothing except make him fat :o
I believe getting them fitter & feeding a slow release mix (mine is on Baileys Endurance Mix) makes them more lively. As I have built up his work, the more willing he has become!

Also try mixing the routine up, dont just school, hack out or even better go hunting if you can (I am still quite scared to do this as I am afriad it will blow his mind!) but that is supposed to be very good for waking up a lazy horse!

Good luck :)

I agree I tried oats with my lad and had no effect, I would have had to feed them by the bucket load and he would have been massive!

We had the same problem with my daughters cobby pony. Oats did nothing so got advised to try Winergy Equilibrium. It's fantastic!! Doesn't make him hot headed & the weight hasn't piled on, he is now a little speed machine with loads of energy!! Every now & again he has an iron suppliment for a week or so. The Winergy has 3 energy types, low medium & high so you can alter depending on how much work he does. Magic has been on the high energy for around a year now & its the best thing I've ever tried!!! Good luck xx

Thanks for all your replies. It is not so much speed i want just something that gives slow release energy, he is quite forward going anyway just looking for a feed to support him while he doing more work. Fitness levels are looking good at the moment.
