just wondering if anyone had any suggestions for feeding my mare, she is really underweight. she gets turned out everyday, hay on a night, mornin and evening feed. i just dont no what to do?? xx
What do you feed her at the moment, plus how much?
What's the quality of the hay like?(old and dusty, or sweet smelling and softer?) What's the grazing like?
How old is she, and what is her workload?
shes on; cool mix, mollichaff, barley and sugarbeet pellets also with veg! hay not too good but the owner of yard gets it in so cant do much about that. grazing isn't bad at minute however much better then her old place. and i just do some light hacking and jumping as shes 17yrs.
no just as we have hit winter really, hasnt been ill and hasnt been seen by a vet, i was just hoping it was because of her breed as i think she is part tb (not positive though) getting the dentist out as soon as i can find a new one in my area.
I would think about putting her on Spillers conditioning nuts (not mix) and Alpha A and sugar beat if she were mine. As much hay as you can get down her neck and a three meal a day regime.
well yes she does its not much though, i think it depends what mood she is in. are conditioning nuts fattening and are they expensive? well i would put her on 3 meals a day bu i find it hard with being at college 3 days a week. x
If you are sure that she is well (as she's an older girl I would get a vet and teeth check) but thin then I'd change her feed.
I'd make sure she's on ad lib hay (if not hayledge), change the chaff to alfa and change the cool mix and barley to a conditioning mix (or special oldies mix) and soaked sugarbeet . I'd also put her on veg oil and a vit/min supplement.

Conditioning feeds are designed to put weight on and do tend to be more expensive yes. 3 meals a day 4 days a week may work. You do not necessarily feed more - just split the meals in to smaller more productive portions.
how much conditioning mix do u suggest for a 16hh mare (i no its quite hard to suggest as u havnt seen her) i no this may sound silly but do u have to soak the conditioning cubes like sugar beat. she is on veg oil now which has improved her coat a hell of a lot! x
There will be specific feed guildelines depending on what feed range you use, so difficult to say really. And no, you don't soak the conditioning feed. Good about the vedge oil, it can make a real difference.
I think Amymay is right, you deffinatly need to be on a conditioning feed. You need to check that you are feeding the correct amount of it as well, so that your mare is getting enough vits and mins as she needs- read the bag, they always give you give you a guideline.
If you feed the recomended amount of a proper cube/ mix, you should not need to suppliment it with chop/ chaff or sugar beet, so your feed bill should only be for the one feed stuff.
I've had good results with 'balanced horse feeds show mix' on my TB. It's about £9 a bag, but you don't need to feed anything else with it- apart from forage.
have to say i dont like this idea of feeding veg oil surely sunflower oil, corn oil or soya oil are much healthier options? i never advise my customers to feed veg oil.
