I know I'm a tad early for this, but just thinking ahead about the summer and garlic for my girl.

I've just looked at the ingredients used on my usual garlic brand and there is a load of other stuff listed first, and garlic oil last! I'm now wondering whether it works as well as the other types/brands.

Getting to my point; which garlic (other than fresh) could I get for the summer; Also is the powder or granules better?

When is the best time to start to introduce it to take effect, or should I give it all year round, as its supposted to help with things like circulation and other stuff too?

Thanks to all, who reply.

Why not just use fresh garlic? Its what I do. Penny used to eat whole cloves but then decided she didn't like them so I just chop them up in her feed now.... yum yum

garlic granuals seem to work out cheaper as you use less.
I feed all year round to ward off flys in summer and good for respiration in winter.

Havn't used it since I read a thread on here about 3 years ago highlighting a report by Liverpool Vet School. It confirms that long term use of powdered/granulated garlic can cause a thinning of the stomach lining. Im sure someone on here can find a link to it.

Same as Tikino - Clitheroes garlic from Feedmark. I feed it all year round. My mare has had garlic in her feed for the nearly 19 years I have had her. Keeps the tubes clearer and (allegedly) helps with minimising fly bites - but I'm not sure about that!!

I use Feedmark's Clairty all year round as it helps him when he is on hay most of the year and he does not strictly like the taste of garlic so would find the pure stuff too much and not eat it.

[/ QUOTE ] you saying this i have heard it can give horses stomach ulcers but people have been using garlic for thousands of years so why only now are they saying it can do damage and others says it does so much!x

I get a big bag from the local Chinese supermarket - pure garlic, can get fine or coarse granules or sometimes flakes. Has gone up somewhat but still half the price of equine brands - around 5.99 for 2kg
Granted though, it helps to live closer to Chinatown than the local feedstore!!
