What "hand" does your horse write with??????

Given that horses used to be used as transport and the traffic passes right to right, the tradition of mounting on the left has grown up as if you mounted from the right you'd be standing in the oncoming traffic flow trying to get on, having had to walk round the horse from the footpath.

I believe that we mount from the left as the majority of us are right handed. We therefore would have our sword scabard on our left sides...so that we can draw the sword properly. It was practical to mount from the left to avoid becoming caught on your own scabard. This is also why manes are supposed to lie on the right...so as the rider was approaching his horse to mount...he could see the quality of its neck conformation.
Perhaps with the number of HHO forumers who encounter problems with other road users, carrying a sword isn't such a bad idea

I am left handed so perhaps I should try getting on from the other side!!! I prefer to ride on the left rein whatever I'm riding and I would say that George is 'left handed'.
