In government and politics we were discussing contraversial matters, hunting got brought up and their was a debate.. Bear in mind most people in my ass wouldn't know one end of the fox from another, and me being from a more rural background.. I explained the need to cull the fox population etc. And just got shot down

Now some of the people won't even look me in the eyes and ate saying really rude and nasty things about me and people that hunt.. :(

Sorry for the rant !! It just really annoyed me.. And has got to me quite alot :(

i learnt this years ago. Have an opinion, have reasons but dont get brought into a debate. My year knew i hunted, but also knew i wouldnt get sucked into discussing it and that i knew the ins and outs better than they did. If they wanted to know i'd be the first to explain but i wouldnt bring it up. That and getting my teacher into hot water for trying to tell a class full of impressionable children that hunting was cruel immoral and that she hated people who hunted because they were stupid blinded idiots. Yeah, erm go explain that to the headteacher, you cant preach about religion so dont preach about my sport.

Basically **** happens, theyll forget next week (god knows my class had more than my love of hunting to hate, my views on genetic screening, abortion, religion sometimes gets raised eyebrows) as long as you let them. You did take a politics class after all, debate is part and parcel of it!

I think it's hard to make the 'wildlife management' argument work, especially somewhere like a politics class where someone is always likely to quote Burns.

And what do you say when someone asks what a covert is?

It's very difficult to explain your reasons to a group of people that don't understand anything about your passions.
Be proud that you stood up for what you have a passion for, and don't get too down.

This is why I try not to ever bring up the subject of hunting around people I don't know, however this September I started at a new college and am starting to get to know people and have met a guy who's dad goes out with his Patterdales so we had a discussion about hunting but there was a girl who sits next to me listening in too who didn't know too much about it and thought you could still hunt foxes. Surprisingly she sat and listened and was alright with what I explained and asked some more questions whether I'd been hunting or not, I expected a full round of :eek::eek::eek: HOW CRUELS!!!! etc  Just shows that SOME people are alright with the facts and are interested in how things work whether they agree with it or not. It was nice to have a change of attitude for once.

This really gets on my nerves!!!

And Clement just ignore them if they say anything else they'll get over it in time, its not as if your a Nazi supporter is it :/

You'll find prats in many places. Mostly in schools, colleges and universities. Its a age thing!

Respect to you for standing up for what you know is right. Just let the idiots do as they please.

It was slightly different in my day. Those that got to gobby and to personal were reminded of their manners at a time of my choosing.

Where I work most people are aware that I hunt (many days taken as holiday in the winter give it away!!), I will gladly give them my thoughts and feelings about this and will listen to theirs without prejudice, but won't get entangled in to a debate, which often, through ignorance, bigotry, not being prepared to accept that others may have a different point-of-view, etc, achieves little IMHO.

Sorry to see that many consider explaining or justifying hunting to be a 'defensive' move. I am always sorry for the ignorance which many anti-hunters display, as, as far as I am concerned it always seems so easy to justify hunting, just as it is to justify pigeon shooting or rat killing. One can still think the fox and deer beautiful animals and yet recognize that they need to be controlled. Hunting is the most sympathetic , natural , and 'greenest' way to accomplish that. I am always ready to debate hunting, but the vast majority of those 'against' seem to have based their beliefs on silly propaganda from LACS and various twerpish pop stars!

THAT seriously P****S me off big time especially when they override you when your trying to explain that it actually isn't and they're wrong :mad: I wouldn't mind but they never listen to what your trying to tell them and tbh how would they know? most of them don't come from rural backgrounds and I bet the vast majority have never read the actual statute!!! Some people sheesh

Gonebananas ; Sorry, I don't understand your point. Please say again in English! (Yeah, I'm afraid I am not up to date with all the ethnic 'street speak!)

Combat Claire, thanks for your comment - why is it I nearly always find myself agreeing with you, soul mate?

Ignorance abound and you tend to find a great deal of it within the walls of educational establishments.

Hi,

Yes - putting the pro-hunting argument over well is always difficult. The anti argument is very simple to sum up: "Animals are cute therefore anything that hurts animals must be bad!"

Our argument - which is basically that managing an ecosystem like the British Countryside is about making informed decisions about a number of options, EVERY SINGLE ONE of which will have adverse effects on animals, so you have to choose which one is "least bad" - is much more difficult to get people to understad. They have to think with their heads not their hearts.

If the issue is raised again, the Countryside Allliance can put you in touch with a number of people, myself included, who will go into Schools and Colleges and do "The Hunting Debate".

You can tell the teacher/lecturer that we are quite happy to go head-to-head with someone from the anti side as well.

We always win...

thank you, i might ask the teacher if we could do that.. i think it would be useful for everyone to hear it from someone, not in school :)
