What happens to retired eventers / Showjumpers ?

Just curious really as to what happens to the ones that come out of eventing because they are a bit too old or a bit creaky or have got as far as they are going to get or for any reason really - the reason i am asking as i have taken up cross country later in life ( I Must be bonkers because I had a baby at forty and started XC after that ) and have brought on
( With Help ) an exracer which is jumping Intro courses with me and jumped up to Novice with someone else but sadly now he has an injury which needs at least 3 months off in the box and would benefit from a lot longer in the field afterwards so I thought in the time off I give him which hopefully for his sake would be a year and as I am desperate to ride rather than finding another project I would love to loan something which has been there done it and got the tee shirt i.e a confidence giver which possibly wants to slow down a bit ? Where would I start to looking for such a horse do they even exist or am I dreaming - any ideas anyone ?

Quite a lot go to equine colleges for students to learn on. I rode a big ex eventer the other day at Moreton Morrell

I always thourght they were usually sold on to do other things. Iv know tons of horses that used to be eventers/showjumpers etc, that are now just being enjoyed by people who dont want to compete to that level.
Try advertising for something to loan, could well be there are lots of people who dont want to sell and would be happy to loan.

When I went hunting I got chatting to a guy who was riding a close relative of Oli Townend's Flint Curtis. She had previously been a grade A jumper and had retired to the hunting field.
