I bit depressing but i was just wondering!

I've had a couple of reasonably bad falls but I think I was most upset when I was four, and a little pony bucked me off into a tree and I broke my arm!

Also, did it bother you getting back on?

Hmm worse fall would have to be when my old horse reared up and went over backwards on me, that was the scariest moment of my life (and verged on the most painful as well) i actually thought i was going to die when i knew he was going over but couldn't do anything about it! It has left permanent (psychological) scars

when I was 14, was riding an evil horse who bolted, broncing and bucking all the way, I came off, foot stuck in stirrup and he trampled me and kicked me and dragged me until I got free.
Back was ripped to shreads, got back on, wasnt scared but was in pain so them making me bloody trot for 30mins for the rest of the hack wasnt nice!

Couldnt lie on it for a week but it never put me off riding or scared me.

I think as kids we generally bounce though!

Sorry this posting made me laugh, my hubby was out riding his horse today, he was jumping him and the horse did a sharp U turn after the jump and hubby flew off.

Horse went trotting off very smugly, while hubby lay winded in the sand lol, i couldnt stop laughing as he just lay there, and the fact the horse was so proud of himself.

He did get back on again and finished exercising him.

He is also the only one to come off my 13.3hh mare lol, he blames the saddle

ok - here goes.

Broke my shoulder at 9 when my horse was attacked by a dog on a hack, causing him to rear and bolt and me to subsequently fall off.

Broke a couple of vertebrae in my back when a horse flipped over on me when I was 12.

Dislocated and hairline fractured my knee on a cross country course when my horse refused and swerved me into a tree....not hard but my knee glanced off it. Not a fall but still a horsey accident.

Two years ago when schooling a really nappy young eventer it decided that it had had enough, threw toys out of pram and flipped over on me. I've been breaking horses for years but this gave no warning for me to jump off and when all 17.1HH of her landed on me, both feet were still in the stirrups.
Nothing was broken but EVERYTHING was crushed and i couldn't move for hours as my body went into complete shock and almost got air lifted as they thought I'd shattered my pelvis and broken my back. This was definately the most painful of anything I have ever done and the bruising was phenomenal - I was literally black from my chest to my knees - and walked like a little old lady for days.

Just a few....

Haha, yea I think so too! I'm only 23 but i'm so much more chicken now!

K&R, yes i can imagine that was very scarey!!! I've had a couple of bad rearers but they have never come over on me. I can imagine you don't appreciate it if they try it on with that kind of thing now!

Good thread in a weird sort of way LOL

Probably got 2 falls which are on an equal par with each other.

First one was my first ever fall: was riding a horse that wasn't really suited for a beginner at all and infact think it was first time off the LR etc. Asked for trot, horse cantered and didnt have that much control. They then told me horse didn't like the door to the indoor school so spooked and shot off - I landed by sliding down the wooden wall of the gallery. Didnt get back on that horse but did get on something else just so my nerve didnt go

Second one was a couple of years ago: jumping down the field over the WH course on a horse I've never jumped before and infact had only ridden twice beforehand in the arena. Cantered up to the jump, popped it and on landing - horse put head between his knees and bucked. I of course in jumping position went flying and landed smack on my back and hurling my neck backwards. Could barely move for the next week but rode for the next two days (was doing a clinic). Got back on and walked horse around despite the pain I was in but 10mins later someone else came off and broke their pelvis - there endeth our lesson for that day

I now have to be very careful as one quick or jerky movement of my neck and the muscles go into spasm and I cant move. Last time it happened - I was picking up a pair of socks. Really ought to get it checked out

Most definately freak out with a rearer now! Though my boy has taken to rearing, and although i freaked out at first am now not bothered, he gets a smack and stops straight away and never goes particularly high. However if a horse i dont know tries it on, i wont push it, i dont have the guts after that accident!

Father in law has just told me about a time he lived in england, his friend went horse riding. His horse reared up, fell back and landed right between the guys leg.

Broke a lot of bones, needs pins etc to relocate a hip

Actually coming off I think it has to be when someone screamed realy loudly, the mare I was riding decided to buck and bolt, swerved and landed me in a fence. I was doubled up, literally wedged between two rails. My back still isnt right 14 years later.
AND I was made to get back on and carry on jumping.
I've had worse experiences, but didnt fall off.

I had a bad fall when I was 14, Broke both radius and ulna completely plus elbow in about 5 or 6 places. Plus had no circulation in my arm so nearly lost it!!

However it wasnt a bad fall!!! I just fell badly!!!

Worst fall I had was when my horse was showjumping on slippery grass. Coming into a gate he put the brakes on, slid into gate, put his foot through gate and got it caught on his foot. He then reared up and I fell off underneath him. I can remember to this day the feeling of his back hooves around and on my head!!! Once he was free I then got up( just to avoid the St Johns ambulance keenies) got on and jumped the fence. Then I retired to a round of applause!!! I was slightly dizzy!!!!

All I can say is in those days it was fashionable/ cool to wear a hat with no chinstrap. It showed how good you were!!! LOL. This was a pony club show where chinstraps and skull caps were compulsory. Thank god for that. I have never jumped since without full head protection and never will!!! It was a serious wake up call!!!

Although this was not a fall that caused serious long term damage it is definitely the worst I have had. Being trampled on the head is pretty scary!!

Ouch at the last one!!!! I had a pony tip up on me and broke my colar bone and felt a bit "crushed" and he was only 13 hands so i can't imagine what it would feel like if a 17.1 lands on you!! OooWWWWW!!!

Thinking of trading my horse in for a smaller one now!

Yes DM, it really pees me off when hunting people still insist on wearing a hat with no strap - cos they think it's traditional I suppose. On my first day out hunting we were hacking home down a track and this horse bolted past us and slipped on the road at the bottom - the lady wasn't wearing a hat and she died!

In terms of injuries, my worst one was xc schooling my friends mare who didnt like jumping off banks.... so i got her to jump nicely a few times, then "had just one more go" at my friends request (ironically, just as i was about to finish the session!!) but relaxed too much and she literally launched me into space!!! I stupidly tried to land on my feet, and as a result broke my ankle. My first thoughts were "better do that again" so definately hasnt put me off! Having said that, not sure if i would risk riding other peoples horses now with things like that, cause being out of action for so long was such a pain in the arse and ended up costing me a small fortune to get my horses looked after and ridden!

Also had an accident a few years back when my horse bolted after landing unbalanced jumping a log in the woods.....was like a comedy sketch as i ducked at the first low branch, then as i lifted my head hit another more solid low branch. Woke up later on the floor with a smashed up face and missing teeth...but went in an ambulance with its lights on which was quite exciting!!

18 months ago it was a miserable November morning and I decided to school my mare in the field as it was windy and the heavens looked like they were going to open. I had just got on her and as we walked across the field I was tightening up her girth. She spooked and I flew straight out the front door, doing a little sommersault as I went. I landed on my head and shoulder, I went to hold my shoulder as you do when you hurt yourself and there was nothing there
shocked.gif
my shoulder was about 6 inches lower down, I had dislocated it. The yard owners husband was on his sit on lawn mower at the time and he heard me shouting for help over the noise!!!! Bless him he was so sweet, caught my mare and helped me up off the floor, also untacked my girl whilst we waited for hubby to come and take me to A&E. It was not a dramatic accident by any stretch of the imagination but it blinking well hurt

It doesnt P*** me off if someone doesnt wear a hat. I just dont understand their mentality to be honest! I just think they are totally stupid! Why risk it?

The thing that P's me off is when H&H show pics of top riders riding without a hat. It really does give the wrong message. I also think it is about time BD made it compulsory to wear chinstraps at all levels. Unfortunately its still all about the look!!

I seriously believe that the pony club, Riding clubs and BE have got it right.

Sorry this isnt the soapbox is it!!! Maybe I should post there!!!

No i think your right, it is up to each individual what they do, and if people are in a school they would be pretty unlucky to get serious head injuries, but it's still possible!

but if people who choose to not wear a hat/chin strap they would still expect us to feel sorry for us at thier funeral, and TBPH, I wouldn't, silly buggers! I would feel sorry for thier family though.

I don't wear a body protector unless I really really have to, but i don't think one would stop me from fatal injuries. Will be corrected if i'm wrong!

Was at a clinic last May with a few friends from HHO and horsey missed a stride coming up a step out of water and fell. I came off and broke my collar bone. Didn't realise it at the time (despite the fact that I couldn't move my are). I ended up driving the 150 miles home before going to A&E. It was very embarrassing as it was the first time I had come off my boy in the 4 years I'd had him and there were quite a few people there too!

These things happen and I gave up trying to event after that and feel safer sticking to dressage and will do some SJ with my new horse!
