i have entered a stessage comp, now i am not a brillian t rider and my cob is not exactly good at dressage, but i thought i would give it a go!! my aim is hopefully to get 30% anything above will be a bonus, and then we can improve next time out, our canter is ropey but what the hell.......what i am after is some reassurance and some embarrassing dressage tales as i'm sure i will have one to tell next week!!

Don't worry and just enjoy it, judges have see all sorts of stuff at your level, including horses refusing to canter, tanking off, bucking..believe me if your canter isn't great that is no bar to having a go, and you might get some useful comments from the judge out of it too

Better to have gone and done it to never have done it at all. Just aim to have fun and I am sure it will be fine.

Ah you'll be fine and good luck!
As for dressage tales...at my first outdoor dressage during my canter transition rock decided he didnt want to be there anymore and ran out of the arena (it didnt have a fence just the boards), then back in, out, in again then did the rest of the test in canter....cantered down centre line...past the halt marker...and up and off the end of the arena stopping at judges car

majorly embarrassing! He was only 4at the time though lol have improved since then though he still doesnt like that arena!

Have a try you may just enjoy it. You can make up lots of marks at prelim with being accurate so dont worry too much how he's going so long as he does as you ask.

My worst sheet comment was "we all have days like these" with my first horse who was a bit 'challenging', I could see her nostrils for the whole of the test and gave the final salute in floods of tears!

Good luck and have fun.

My first dressage comp, Septre refused to go in the indoor school- took 2 people to get her in! She was tense during the test but I did get some construvtive comments from the Judge.

At the very least just think of it as an assesed training exercise!

Embarrassing tales...

Ok, my previous horse used to be obsessed with smelling poo...he was quite tricky anyway & I was so relieved to get to the free walk on a long rein that I didn't notice the poo on the long diag, or I'd have taken a slightly diff line... Anyway, he stopped dead to smell it, so I did a polite nudge...no reaction...good prod with the spurs...no reaction...big smack with schooling whip & he jumped in the air, did a huge buck & went uuuuurrrrggghhhh. Got a 4 for that movemt & missed getting placed by .4 of a mark. Grrrr.

Most recent horse decided to be terrified of some plastic trees & shied the whole way across the school so I was at the A end instead of the C end, which really threw me.

Saw someone else at a show on a v nice horse enter at A...& then depart again in reverse cos her horse saw itself in the glass windows of the judge's box & didn't like what it saw...

So don't worry - you won't be the worst the judge has ever seen!! Good luck!! We've all got to start somewhere! Let us know how you do...

I'm in the same boat. Whats worse is
a) i've never competed properly before and
b)i'm competing for my school.

good luck, let us know how you get on!

I can't help laughing at these stories!!!

Good luck, you'll be fine - try to relax your body and your mind should follow!

The most embarrassing dressage test I've done was on a SJ pony, we went into canter and he saw the boards around the edge as a jump

Normally he was ridden in a kimblewick (sp?) bit with a curb but we had to use a plain snaffle - there was no stopping him.

Worst thing was, got back in the arena only for him to do exactly the same again.
