just out of interest my mare has been off for 8 months following tendon injury ,daughters scince feb due to lameness now confirmed as stifle.
both will need long period of gradual return to work,ie lots of walking .
we had discussed the option of a loan horse or share or even to buy if the prognosis was poor as daughter is doing a levels and is missing all the fun and competing ,pony club stuff. however the planned return to work will be time consuming and im worried we wont have time although i work p t and daughter has long summer off.
what do others do in this sort of situation?

My big show horse is out of action indefinitely so I just got another one. But then it is easy for me to do as I keep mine at home so no livery fees or anything.

If your daughter is in the middle of A-levels and stuff would it not be better not to have to concentrate on that as well as keeping said pony competition fit and schooled? I know I would have done better in my exams if I hadn't have had a breaker, 2 to show ridden and 2 for in-hand that year.

a levels are finished end of june , both ours are just returning to work ,weeks and weeks of walking. ideally riding for someone else would be best to fit around other commitments i guess.

My mare has been off for 18 months so I bought another one recently - however, I would say make sure you know what you want as the one I've just bought isn't quite what I thought it would be! Plan is to sell him on when she is rideable again as I don't have time for two. Good luck.

hi

my boy was off for 5 months then a further 2 months. horses are literlally my life so i thought i'd really be wanting another one to ride in the meantime, however i found his return to work to be very time consuming and stressful, lots of revisits from saddlers, vets, physio etc etc so i was happy just to at least ride him. i did occasionaly ride friends horses when i really felt like it

My boy has only just returned to work as well after a tendon injury beginning of jan!
We are also still in the walking phase adding 5 mins a week at the moment!!

I did have the chance to ride a friends horse occasionally but now mine is back, even though it is just walking ( i normally show jump him!) i am focusing on getting him right again.

Good luck, as i well know its a long process :-)

having just started our first day under saddle, having done 1 month in hand we are now up to 20 mins a day and have to increase it by 5 mins a week up to 45 mins then introduce trot work i really cant see how we will have time, and my intention is to get them both right. more for daughter really but need to be sensible and realistic..
