I have a 3 and a half year old gelding, that I got as a present, as a foal. He's just being backed. I measured him 3 weeks ago and he was 14.3hh. His mother was 15.3hh, father unknown, as the man who gave him to me bought the mare in foal, from , lets just say, dodgy people. As he is now putting up his 4 year old teeth,(according to the horse dentist), and is 14.33hh, how much more will he grow? He's well fed and looked after, if that makes a difference. I was never any good at judging height. It would be interesting to hear peoples predictions, see whos right when he's officially measured in!!

Do you know any of her breeding, that can help estimate.
Some breeds are known to be late at maturing.

Some are fully grown height wise by 4, other breeds are mostly grown by 4 but can then creep up an inch or 2 from 4-7, sometimes even more.
I had a welsh section C who grew 2 1/2 inches between 6 - 11, it was probably earlier on and closer to the 6 but I only ever measured her at these 2 ages.

I think if cob type, you will get an extra inch or two over the next few years x

Mine is 14.3hh in front and 15hh behind and he is 3 years 5 months. i am expecting him to make 15.1-2 ish as he is still quite leggy and he is part welsh which seem to be slow maturers. Mines mum is 15-15.2hh and his dad is 16.1hh.
I should think yours still has a few inches to grow so depending on breeding and real age i would say 15-15.1hh.

Oh, He's a real cob type. If I knew how to put up pics, I would. He's not too heavy, but good bone, red and white, broad shoulders, has a horses head on him, without it looking too bad. full size bridle, needed cob breaking tack to fit him, pony stuff wouldnt go near him. I dont mind what height he'll turn out, to be honest, as he'll carry me even as it is. I'm just interested, as I'm really bad at judging!! His mam was very light, slight, so I'm thinking his sire was heavy, think he kinda had to be, to produce what he did. My poor "Spirit", he's the ugly duckling that has slowly turned into a swan. He probably was the ugliest foal I've seen in a while, BIG head, real skinny neck, short body, you get the pic!! But he has turned out lovely, and everyone that has seen him lately are saying with a bit of work done, he'll sell well, but i dont want to sell him.

I was thinking the same, but I'm usually wrong, so I'll just wait and see! But it sounds about right. I'm tall, well, ish, at 5ft 8", but i dont look at all big on him, my friggin legs mite be a tad long, but if he grows another inch or two, I'll be fine!!!! Spirit was born in may, so wont be 4 til then, But is def ready for a bit of work, he's "grown up" since he's been ridden, sensible coming in from the field, and with getting pared. It's like he thinks he's a "big boy" now, so has to behave!! Funnt to watch, considering

mine was born in may too! i'm 5ft6 and quite slight but my youngster is really fine and leggy (a spotted thoroughbred he looks like, with a welsh head and bum thrown in for good measure :p) and i didn't look too bad on him! I'm sure yours will carry you easy if hes heavyweight.
if you upload your pics to photobucket and then shrink them to "large" size and then copy and paste the image html shown :)
