Hey guys, those of you who have read my recent posts will know that I have been struggling with my confidence with my current horse (not his fault I should add!) and have finally made the decision to part company. I'm 5'7-8" and average build. I'm looking to get a 15.2hh cob/cob type that can live out to do a bit of everything and get my confidence back. Don't really want anything bigger as I know i feel safer on this size of horse atm - will I look silly though? Planning on something that will take up my leg!!

I'd look between 14.2hh and 15.2hh. My sister is 5'10 and has a 14.1hh Welsh x new forest and they are a fab pair. She looks a little tall on her but she doesn't struggle at all.

Sorry forgot to ask your weight, don't mean to sound personal but it would determine height and build of horse better than your height really.

Currently *whispers* 11 stone but dieting!!!! Don't worry I realise that if the horse is finer it would have to be bigger if that makes sense! But would really rather have something smaller. I've also broken my left ankle 3 fecking times so something smaller that is easier to get on without hurting my ankle too much would be great. I'm falling to bits lol

Im about the same height as you (but different weight). I find 15.2hh-16hh is my ideal height - I probably look better on those 16hh-16.2hh but cant really get my leg around them ifthey arent TB types (despite having long legs, they arent very strong). If I were you, Id look for something about 15.2hh MW. Youd fit on something smaller but may not feel that comfortable on it especially if it has a short neck.

You would be ok on the size horse you wanted. 11 stone is NOT heavy for 5'7"- 5'8"!!! I'm 5'9" and 12 1/2 stone and ride a 15.3 TB and I don't look big on her at all and she carts me around as if I'm not here, LOL! I don't want to ride a bigger horse either so I understand where you are coming from.

I'm about 5'9" and have just downsized to a 14.3 welsh cob. Brilliant.I can get on without a mounting block. It's treally nice to not feel overhorsed. Best thing I ever did.

I'm the same height and only half a stone lighter (and slim! - you can't loose much off 11st without becoming underweight!).

I had a lovely 15.2 STB gelding a white ago and never felt big on him.

I currently have a 15.1ish LW cob/LW hunter type and look a little tall on him but not hugely.

I also had the most beautiful, lovely. kind 15.2 HW cob and looks fine on her. Did everything and anything on her too!

I also used to school someones 14.2HW cob and looked positively small on her!

You don't even need something as big as 15.2 if you don't want. I ride my friends 13.2 Fell pony and he carries me just fine, although I look a bit tall.

If you like the smaller horses, or feel more confident with a smaller horse (the reason my friend bought her 13.2 Fell pony) then look some something from 14hh (proper HW) upwards. I feel almost over-horsed on a full up (14.2) highland!

P.s - I actually LIKE the big horses and feel most at home of something about 16.2hh. But for some reason I seem to aquire little piddly things and currently also have a 14.1 (to make 15hh) coloured cob baby

I am slightly taller (and somewhat heavier) than you and prefer to ride bigger horses - 16.3/17.0 hh heavily built - but we also have a 14.3 gypsy cob and I used to ride her regularly before she retired. She 'takes it up in the width' and she never had any trouble carrying me. I did wonder at first if my feet would get in her way on our steep hills but we were fine.
Go for what you feel comfortable with.

Thanks for all the photos Kallibear!! I'l positively in love with your L/W cob, its amazing - I think you look the right size on him, but really small on the H/W of the same size!! Just goes to show!
Thanks for the words of wisdom all, will look for something around the 15.2 mark with confidence now!

If I were you I'd just go out and try as many horses as you can. I'm relatively small (about 5ft3") and I thought that I was only comfortable on smallr horses (max 15.2hh), however lately I've been riding a lot of different horse and I've come to realise that it's much more about the horse that the height- I'd rather have a sane 16.2hh than a nutty 16hh!
