We have just got a very old pony, living on his own with some sheep in the field at the bottom of the garden, with a field shelter/stable combo.
I currently have no insurance at all - what do I need?
thanks

At the very least you need 3rd party insurance just in case your pony caused an injury or damage to a third person. If your pony got out onto the road and caused a serious accident and you were found liable this could bankrupt you. Insuring the pony for vet's costs will be expensive and you probably would make the decision to PTS if you were faced with colic which needed surgery so personally I wouldn't insure for vets cover. You may have cover for your stables etc under your house insurance, so i'd check with your insurers. sorry not an expert just using common sense and a bit of experience. You can get3rd party insurance with Gold level BHS membership which I think is good value as well as supporting a horse charity which does some excellent work.

The absolute minimum you need really is 'third party/public liability' incase he, for instance, gets out and causes damage to someone elses property. There's quite a few places that do it - I'm a Gold member of BHS and that includes cover for public liability - costs about £60 for the year.

I doubt if you would get any insurance for the pony if he is elderly and his value is likely to be less than the premium you would have to pay. It would only be for the most limited cover as well. Most insurance companies won't take on a new pony over a certain age, even if they continue to insure one that they have covered for a long time.

It would be a good idea to get 3rd part/Public Liability and there are several organisations that do this as part of your membership. The BHS is the obvious one, but there are others too. (If you join any other organisation just check that it offers 24/7 coverage and not just if you are taking part in their activities.)
