It's a dutch carriage horse, they're increasing in popularity at the moment as you didn't often see them outside of coaching circles. They've only been officially recognised by the dutch stud book in the last 20odd years as they were a forerunner to the dutchwarmblood and therefore throughts of of inferior. But they now have thier own section.

They're generally pretty friendly horses although their conformation is usually pretty suspect but its the breed standard and they're designed to cover alot of ground quickly so are normally pretty hardy. They normally are all up in front but then have no definition to the hip. Looks like somone drew a straight line from saddle to tail.

I love that picture, it coulnd't be more gelderlander if it tried. I heard in my head as soon as i saw it "I am gelderlander hear me roar!"

Gelderland is a region of the Netherlands noted for farming and it was in this district that the Gelderlander first appeared as a working farm horse.

A hundred years of careful breeding has resulted in a Gelderlander horse with special qualities. What characterises the Gelderlander breeding most is the removal of unwanted characteristics by rigorous selection. Gelderlander breeders have been very careful in introducing different blood for good health, power, but above all a docile, work willing and stress-resistant character.

Thanks. It was really bugging me, it wasn't so long ago that it seemed every other coach had a team of gelderlanders put to it! Also theres a frantastic trandam (three in a row) driven by bob alexander in carraige driving this month, outsiders are bays and middle horse is palamino, interesting turnout.

Not sure about having one myself tho, espcially to ride. The flat backside really puts me off. I want to steal marks horses they're dutchwarmblood crosses and are fantastic...

About 20 years ago or maybe even more, a number of my friends bought these big impressive horses as show jumpers, they were all gelderlanders and so distinctive looking.
Then they seemed to drop in popularity. I think some were very heavy and strong and not so fast as some would have liked to get round a course of jumps.
Its nice to see they are returning in popularity as they are a big capable but laid back type that many people will find an easy ride and great allrounder for dressage and jumping.
I would love one too.

Steph Croxford's GP horse, Mr President, is a Gelderlander as well. He really doesn't look like the typical dressage horse, but when he moves, he's fantastic and Steph has done wonderful things with him !

We have one, shes got some BSJA winnings, been XC, hunts, and does a nice dressage test when her head isn't up in the air. Brave mare, jumps anyhting but has a hideous head with a big roman nose (common with the breed). Lots and lots of fun to ride though.

We had two Gelderlanders a few years ago - beautiful horses.
They look very smart in carriage because of their high head carriage.
