what is a hunter trial

Please would someone tell me the difference between a cross country competition and a hunter trial.

a cross-country competition is a hunter trial basically except a hunter trial should be done in correct hunting attire but now you can just ride in dark colours

I just do hunter trials in my XC colours

A hunter trial will often have a gate to open & close - timed, whereas a XC will just have a timed jumping section.
