what is a pony club rally?

It's a group lesson open to all the members, divided roughly into ability groups of perhaps between 4 - 6 riders.

Most PC branches expect you to be smart, so you turn up in beige jods, either a pc sweatshirt or tweed jacket and tie (depending on your District Commissioner"s preference!) and you get put into a group of similar ability for a lesson with an instructor.

The instructor decides what to do, so if you get an instructor that loves jumping, you will do mostly that. Some rallies though are billed as flatwork or jumping, so it does vary.

There might be up to 8 different groups, depends on the size of the branch, and they will try to put together groups of the same standard and age, although any new member usually gets put in a lower ability group first for safety reasons.

All day rallies tend to start around 10.30 or 11am am and stop for lunch, and children either ride again in the same group in the afternoon continuing their lesson, or they merge with another group to do games or handy pony etc. Sometimes it might just be a morning rally - best to ask, as branches are notorious for forgetting to tell new members how it works!
