As our previous horse is now happily settled in her new home I am tentatively starting to search for a new horse for myself and my daughter. I've decided I wanted something a little bigger and more middle weight than our previous horse; it's what I feel more comfortable on and my daughter has grown quite a bit in the last eighteen months so can also ride something bigger

My absolute ideal would be a ten year oldi ish middlweight 16 gelding who is happy hacking out alone with me three or four times a week and I could take to do some very basic dressage and clinics and my daughter can take to some small evening shows and pony club rallies. I appreciate that I won't get the idea and I am open on age, gender etc but I am not buying another five year old.

I've got around 10k put aside for our new friend . As we are not currently paying any horse associated costs I can add a bit to this over the next few months but wouldn't feel comfortable spending more than about 12k.

Does this seem realistic; I am not clear if prices are changing much at present. I appreciate the type of horse I want is basically what a lot of people want so prices are likely to remain high, or at least not drop much.

From a few ads I’ve seen recently I think this is a realistic budget if you’re looking for a mid-level all rounder rather than a more flashy competition type. As it happens I just got the Equestrian Notice Board email and there’s a nice grey 15.3 mare who meets your description, only thing is she’s 14. Asking price £8k. There are two others that are lovely and in budget but only 5.

To ad to the above: even though I’m not looking, I have a horsequest email alert set up from ages ago, which is worth doing to keep an eye on prices. I haven’t carefully analysed it but I think they have dropped a bit.

Sounds similar to what I’m looking for (more like keeping an eye on/day-dreaming about really…) and it seems realistic price wise - good luck!

I would say that's a good budget. I bought a 16hh, 8yo ID cross a year ago for £8.5k. Apart from the fact she's a mare, she's exactly what you describe you're looking for.

How did you find her? I’ve been looking for a while (smart 15.2-16hh low level all rounder and quiet hunter) with a budget up to £15k within 2.5 hours travelling in the south east, that is sound and can pass a vet - I’m finding impossible ?

Can you widen your area search? You could be lucky ?

I would not find anything when I was toying with buying in the summer my budget was higher .
Size and soundness where the two problems I kept knocking up against .
Plenty the type I wanted but too tall plenty the right height but too fine .
And the usual masses of horses showing various degrees of not right .
