What does a splint exactly look like ? My horse knocked himself and has a little swelling on his hind leg but apparently it's just a knock ....

Quite a good explanation here.

Cob has just developed one so I was doing some reading up on it. Above says splints are unlikely to firm on the back legs.

You will often get a splint on the opposite leg to the first one. Intially the hrose is lame but then stops being lame as the splint has formed. Early intervention using ice cups, ice packs and DMSO really helps otherwise just grin and bear it.

A previous horse got a 'ladder splint' which is a number of splints within the splint bone, joined together. Was a total nightmare but did become sound after about three weeks.

My horse got three splints in under six weeks when I first had him. I think it was because his field was on a hill and he used to canter down the hilll to the gate when he saw me. The ground was rock hard as it was in the summer and I think he overloaded his front end and this is what caused them. It usually horses with poor confirmation that get them, but my horse has really good confirmation so not sure what all that was about.

Mine has a small one, if you feel inside her knees and slightly down there it is, it is only small so I missed it when I bought her, no biggie at all. When new they are obviously more swollen!

Applecart,
That would make sense. Ie, matching splints. We were advised to put cob on hard dry surface 3 months ago because he has a stifle problem. Now it's back to keep him on soft ground because of the splint. Can't win!
