It/he/she is someone who winds people up on a thread, the pretend to be interested then start saying stupid things and getting people annoyed for the fun of it!
Somone that comes online mainly to cause trouble. Say for example that somone comes on here and makes up stories about themselves that are not true. or somone who comes on here just to leave rude or abusive comments to others just for the sake of getting a laugh out of it. Sad people really.
Do you know sometimes on other forums some extreamly interesting and informative threads have come about because of trolls!! It can sometimes provoke really interesting discussions, much to the annoyance I guess of the troll because they generally want to cause anger and frustration so I'm thinking a adult reply with interesting views is often the best policy!!!
That's kind of what I thought, sort of. I used to know a pony called Troll. Small section A I think. Every time I see the word troll I think of him and smile Had a bit of a thing for bottom biting
There are several variations of Trolls, the word (in this context) is a corruption of trawl, as in they are people who trawl around the 'net looking for sites where they can cause trouble, believing themselves to be completely anonymous and safe from any repercussions (they are wrong).
There are trolls who join in a discussion (or start one) just to see if it will wind anyone up
There are trolls who are polite, well 'spoken' (correct grammar and punctuation) well liked, but are insidiously pissing other people off by picking on them persistently, albeit in a polite courteous manner, that looks perfectly innocent to the observer.
You also get the type who have made thousands of posts and think they own the place, and as such have the right to dictate to everyone else as to whom can post on the board, and what people are allowed to say when they post (not to be confused with the insidious bully above)
You also get the type who evolve from both the above types - when their behaviour doesn't illicit the right response, they go off line, gather their real life friends and get them to sign up at the board and start flaming the object of their disgust in a bid to make it look like 'everyone' hates the other person...
Thanks for asking that scatty_mare. I didn't know either. Sort of had an idea that it was someone making things up to provoke chaos. But sometimes, I have difficulty in distinguishing between real posts and troll-y ones. Someone will ask something that just the day before sparked off a humdinger of a row and then I'm not sure if they are serious or being a wind-up merchant. But I haven't been here long.
Another observation - the really squabbly posts seem to be done at night and not in the day. I wonder if people have been on the vino when they do the night time ones (erm, I have a glass of rose just now but am in a polite mood)
