So I know you cant see it that well in picture but it is a spreading of "warts" all over pastern. and about 1 1/2 inch up leg from pastern, thanks

Hi Kafrin (again !!).

I've been looking this up and have come up with either warts or sarcoids !

The book says that warts like these tend to affect young horses, produce cauli-flower looking clusters, and usually go away after about four months. They can affect the lower limbs.

sarcoids was less clear, but can be cauli-flower like too.

I hope that helps, really interested to know now too !! sm x

One of my old horses years ago had something like this. It is a type of mud fever / dermatology problem.

Nothing a bit of hibiscrub wont fix.

My old horse had it in the summer months, so it baffled me. Kept cleaning and drying and he never got it again after that summer.

I could be wrong, but looks very similar.

Have a look at this http://www.horseandhound.co.uk/news/article.php?aid=258577 , I think this could be what yours has, do a google search for Verrucous pastern dermatitis and look at the images, very similar although it does talk about it being heavy horses that are affected. Apparently it has made a big comeback in recent years! If it isn't a regular illness it would explain why your vet didn't recognise it.

It couldn't be collagen lumps could it? Is this on a cob or cob type?

Many cobs / cob types build up lumps of gunk - collagen to the initiated. They can start anywhere but behind the knee is a favourite and they spred. It also gets called "cob knee" for obvious reasons.

The piccy looks a bit more like warts or cauliflower type lumps. Collagen lumps look more like scabby bits - as the hair grows they push up from the skin. But they are very very hard and sharp edged. They can get quite big too.

If what you've got is round edged then ignore me. But if it is sharp edged try rubbing in loads of emmollient cream - sudocrem, E45, mud guard... what ever you have to hand and see if they soften and come away over 24 hours or so. Hibi scrubbing collagen lumps doesn't work very well and hurts because of the sharp edges scratching the skin.

If there is any chance these are sacoids don't touch them at all. Any interference with sarcoids can spread them and make matters loads worse. Get your vet to check that first,
