We are mid debate this morning - all because we had to ask somebody to leave our yard. Opinion is split between 'get rid asap' and 'sort them out'. I chose the former based on the following:

Owner refuses to feed adequate amounts - horse has lost a lot of weight
Leaves animal for 14 hours plus, with no hay
Lied about worming - they had not wormed for 8 months and refused to worm count
Insist that horse only needs to see the farrier once or twice a year - because it wears feet down on the roads (?)
Changed fields without seeking permission - very stupidly turned out with a known bully and lucky to get away with it.
No poo picking for 6 months....... we only ask that it is done at least once a week.
Argued that main gates don't need to be kept closed - 'people' should made sure that their horses don't get loose (one of my favourites!!)

And i could go on, so am I too fussy or should I have continued to bang m head on a brick wall? We have all tried to help but the thank you's never come and the ears are firmly closed.

But am I depressed - no, not really as the grass is beginning to grow and the other horses all look super!

get rid. I am afraid that as a YO i can't put up with this sort of person and trying to change them into an acceptable livery is impossible. Your yard your rules (provided they are reasonable) no one refuses a worm count. I worm count every single new horse to my yard before it is allowed on my grazing. I then worm it for what ever is shown. If I am not convinced by the owners I will then worm count again to make sure the wormers have a) been given and b) been effective. i have only had to resort to this with one livery as I was convinced they had not given their horse the wormers.
Life is too short to put up with people who openly flout your rules and cause other horses/owners problems. Not shutting a gate is basic stupidity. All horses can get loose and it is only common sense to prevent an accident.

Get rid and be glad nothing major has happened.

If this is not a young or inexperienced person, but merely an arrogant person who thinks that they know it all and everything should be done to suit them, then I think you are right.

However, for the sake of the horse, might it be worth sitting down with them just one more time and going through your list, giving the reasons why their decisions are bad ones before this person goes on to do exactly the same at another yard?

Perhaps the threat of eviction could make her open to a little education?

if it were me I'd talk to them about it and give them like a week to improve their behaviour (if you havent already) and then ask them to leave.

If you've explained everything and tried to help them, and they won't listen then I'd have no hesitation in asking them to leave if they are not meeting your expectations and standards. It's the horse you have to feel very very sorry for.

I agree with K27. To be honest, if they're convinced they're right there probably isn't much you can do but ask them to leave.

Have you tried making a list of yard rules and putting them somewhere that everyone will see?
You could then see if anything changes, if it doesn't have a chat and say that the rules must be followed for everyones safety/insurance. If she then still ignores the rules get rid.

Good luck :)

Sounds like this isn't going to work.

Would it be possible for the YO to take the horse on part livery instead of DIY, or simply charge every time poo picking etc does not happen, and for feeding if the owner does not show up by x o'clock? Include worm counts etc. and bill upfront? That would at least solve some of the issues. And probably be a lot better for the horse, than being moved to another DIY where the owner can just continue as they are?

I agree with the idea that, if it hasn't already been done, sit owner down, give her a list of expectations and give her a month to get it right with the knowledge that if she doesn't she will be out. Its not easy though and I personally would feel guilt towards the poor horse!
