I have always had geldings, and have always known them to make an odd squeaking sound when ridden. Does anyone know what it is?

I feel like someone told me years ago, and said that it was to do with them being gelded but I can't for the life of me remember and am quite keen to know.

My 2yr old gelding makes this noise when he trots, someone told me its because they need their sheath cleaned - however i did that and he still makes the noise. Would really like to know what it is..

I was told it was made by the sheath but not because it is dirty.

Because when they are gelded they stop developing so their bits are smaller than they would be if left as a stallion, so you get air in there which makes a noise.

I was told it was because there sheath needed cleaned, but as said previously i think its just air getting trapped. My gelding actually very rearly makes a noise lol

I only rode one that did and after his sheath was cleaned he was fine but maybe this then released the trapped air??

I think they just get trapped air up there when they are tense/nervous tbh. Nothing to do with cleanliness afaik :)

It can be caused by the gelding scar, there are often adhesions which are uncomfortable for the horse. If you feel behind the sheath where the old scar is, and it feels very cold, this can be the problem.
You might need a Bowen person or similar to help release it, and you may find your horse can move much more freely if it is no longer a problem.

All interesting comments, thanks very much! He doesn't do it all the time, just occasionally. I didn't mean they always made the squeak, i just meant that it doesn't come and go, it happens some times, and not others.

My dad asked my mum this one day.

When mum explained, his response was:

"Well, I don't make that noise when I run".

Oh dad...*shame*
